How To DBQ Analyze each doc figure out
How To DBQ
• Analyze each doc- figure out how it answers the question • Decide on HIPP for 5 doc • You only have to do ONE part of HIPP • Organize the docs into groups that will fit your thesis • 2 groups- decide which is X and which will be A/B • Write thesis
Body Paragraphs • Topic Sentence from thesis • How the Doc answers the prompt (repeat for all docs in the paragraph) • HIPP if you’re doing it for that doc • 1 piece of outside evidence that supports your topic sentence • ANALYSIS STATEMENT- just like in LEs
Use Of Documents • Use EVERY doc • HIPP for 5 Docs • NEVER say “In Doc #, . . . ” • Use the doc to answer the question • CITE THE DOC AT THE END OF THE SENTENCE (Doc 3) • You don’t HAVE to reference the author, but you can (just don’t do it for every doc- it gets repetitive)
Doc A • Industrialization caused a decrease in the cost of food and fuel which benefitted many Americans because it allowed easier access to goods. (Doc A) During the Gilded Age, new technology allowed for goods to be mass produced, thus reducing the cost of many items (Context).
Doc A • A chart of indexed prices shows the cost of food and fuel gradually reducing from 1870 -1899 as a result of industrialization (Doc A). The context of this chart was the growth of industrialization in the Gilded Age, during which new technology allowed for goods to be mass produced, thus reducing the cost of many items.
Outside evidence • Something Specific- like you do with SAQs • Person, date, law, event- a “key term/people” • Explain how it proves your point • 1 per paragraph • Can be at the end or after a doc that it is related to
Analysis Statements • Same as Long Essays • Comparison- analyze WHY they are the same or WHY they are different • CCOT- analyze WHY it was a continuity or change • Causation- analyze WHY is was a cause or effect (WHY did it cause something to happen or WHY was it an effect) • Periodization- explain HOW different or similar the time period to the time period before and/or after
Reminders • CCOT- be sure to explain HOW it was a change or continuity. Reference the before/after to prove it. • Example: A major change was her hair color. She changed it from blonde to red. OR Her hair color was a major continuity because it was blonde all through her high school years. • Also- you have to talk about continuities AND changes! • Comparison- Be sure that you have DIRECT COMPARISON. You have to talk about BOTH THINGS in EVERY PARAGRAPH.
