DISCUSSION Four Main Topics 1. We Know, We Wonder 2. How Solutions Effect Surfaces 3. About Antimicrobials 4. Final Thoughts
TOPIC #1 We Know, We Wonder
TOPIC 1#, WE KNOW, WE WONDER What’s the Difference?
TOPIC #2, HOW SOLUTIONS EFFECT SURFACES Always Follow These 5 Basic Steps 1. Identify fabrics on the seating (work with your dealer or salesperson) 2. Follow the fabric manufacturer’s cleaning and disinfecting recommendations (blog post has links to all their websites) 3. Use only disinfectants recommended by the fabric manufacturer 4. Rinse any disinfectant residue with a clean, damp cloth 5. Use additional tips and precautions from the blog post which includes findings from Irwin Seating in-house testing on how various disinfectants effect a range of fabrics
TOPIC #2, HOW SOLUTIONS EFFECT SURFACES ACT Disinfectant Resistance Testing
TOPIC #2, HOW SOLUTIONS EFFECT SURFACES Irwin Testing • Near-term impact of disinfectants on commonly used fabrics (coated, woven) • Household disinfectants (409, Fantastik) had least effect on all fabrics • Conversely, bleach had most severe effect • Disinfectant eventually builds up and leaves residue • Effects, mostly from bleach, ranged from color change, making fabric shiny or dull, or making it thin or stiff
TOPIC #3 ABOUT ANTIMICROBIALS Antimicrobials 42% of respondents plan to use antimicrobial materials in seating − Destroy or stop growth of or commonly touched surfaces microorganisms − Antimicrobial property can come from material attribute, physical structure or chemical additive − Antibiotic is toxic to microorganism − 6 types of microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, virus, archaea, algae, protozoa) − Antimicrobials do not necessarily combat COVID-19 − Cleaning and disinfecting still key (Source: Steelcase / Designtex)
