How to build a computer Part 1 How to choose parts
Learning objectives • We will go over how to choose parts for your system • We will practice how to fit the parts together
Today • We will go over the basic internals of a pc.
Basic computer equipment • • Motherboard CPU RAM Case Graphics card Hard drive Optical Drive Power Supply
Motherboard • The motherboard is the most important item when building your pc. • It decides what form factor for the case you use, what processor/ram/etc. • If everything is compatible with your motherboard then everything else should be compatible with each other.
CPU • The CPU is the important part of your working computer as everything you will want to use you computer for will be controlled by this tiny easily damaged chip.
RAM • Theoretically you can run a computer but now you can’t. • This stores your immediate use data that you have used before and is the easiest and cheapest way to improve a PC.
CASE • The case is important as it will stop all of the parts safe and all in the same place.
GRAPHICS CARD • A graphics card is not actually necessary as most motherboards now have an integrated graphics card. But if you want/need to do something graphically intense such as image editing, or intense gaming you need to but a high performance graphics card.
HARD DRIVE • A hard drive is important as it stores all of your data and your operating system/s.
OPTICAL DRIVE • An optical drive is of less importance nowadays as disc are being used less but you can use USB drives for most of the same information.
POWER SUPPLY • Your power supply is important as it controls how much power your computer needs/gets.
