How to bead on a loom By Amber Smith-Quail
You will need the following supplies. . . - Bead loom Synthetic sinew Scissors Bead mat Beads (all same size) A needle that can pass through the beads at least twice
And a pattern. . .
Words, numerals, pictures. . .
Symbols, icons, colour, pattern
can all be used to communicate your message.
Inspired? Using graph paper, a pencil, pencil crayons or markers create your own pattern. Be mindful of the number of rows in your design - the looms will accommodate up to 14 rows of beads.
Preparing the sinew Synthetic sinew is a waxed fiber that is often used for sewing hide and for beadwork. In this application, the sinew needs to be separated when you divide the fibers it will show you where it can best be divided. Some of you may find it helpful to do this step in partners. I usually separate a single strand into 4 and use thickest piece for stringing the loom. Dividing it into 3 is okay too, just be advised that the warp threads will have a more robust appearance, (and that’s okay!) NOTE: On the left is a single strand on the right is a single strand that has been divided into three.
Some more helpful info about sinew. . . Sinew is waxed so it has a tacky texture. This texture helps it to easily glide through beads and reduces snags. It also means that things easily stick to it. When handling sinew, keep it up off the floor and on a clean surface - this will help keep it from collecting dirt and dust. Once the sinew is divided, bundle it. This makes it easy to store until it’s time to use it.
Stringing the loom Start by making a secure loop and placing it over a screw at the end of the loom. Next, hook the sinew on the screw at the opposite end of the loom. The sinew should be placed in between each nail. Tension is important. Continue to string the sinew back and forth, each time securely hooking it on the screw.
Stringing the loom (continued). . . How many strings are required? This is decided by your design. If your design is 9 beads in depth then you will need to string your loom 10 times as shown. . .
Adding the beads (finally!) String the beads in the first row of your pattern. In this case, 9 black beads. Then place them under and in between the loom (warp) strings. One bead per space. Be patient if it takes a few tries. Now pass the needle back up through the beads making certain to stay above the warp. The first row is always the most challenging. Here’s a closer look. Notice that the sinew is strung on both sides of the warp. This is what ‘locks’ the beads in place.
Repeat the process. . . Remember to keep your needle above the warp thread
