How technology influences interconnections The internet allows people to connect with other people in different places more quickly and conveniently than ever before. • Internet- 2. 1 billion internet users • Social networking sites- 2. 4 billion accounts • Facebook- more than 1 billion accounts • Youtube- 48 hours of footage every minute • 250 billion emails are sent every day • 500 million google searches made every day • Twitter- 250 million tweets a day
LEARNING OBJECTIVE: To be able to research questions for a deeper inquiry (re interconnection and globalisation)
Survey Questions Students to develop at least 10 questions about the ways in which people in class use the internet. Example questions might be: 1. Do you watch television shows online? 2. How many hours a week would you watch on average? 0 -2 hours 2 -6 hours 6 -10 hours or more Students must conduct survey with their peers. Data can be presented in a visual format for eg: table, Pie chart
• You are now ready to conduct your survey! Make sure you print off enough- you will need at least 10 to be able to represent the data on a graph. You need to make sure you ask the questions, don’t just hand out the forms! THIS SECTION CAN BE DONE IN GROUPS OF 3 -4 STUDENTS. YOU WILL NEED TO SHARE YOUR DATA!
Now it is time to analyse the data you have collected! Choose four of your questions which will best allow you to investigate and report on the focus topic. THIS SECTION IS TO BE DONE INDIVIDUALLY. Firstly, put each set of data into a table like the one below: Number Percentage (%) Always 1 10% Often 4 40% Sometimes 3 30% Never 2 20% Total 10 100%
Individual Summary on Data • You now need to write a 100 -150 word summary for each graph/table, explaining your findings. THIS SECTION IS TO BE DONE INDIVIDUALLY. Use the questions below to focus your writing: • What are the general trends shown in your data? What does your data suggest about how people value ICT? • Which option was the most popular choice? Explain why you think this is. • Which option was the least popular choice? Explain why you think this is. • What can you conclude from this data? • What might other people conclude from this data? What other perspectives could people have on the data? • An example has been done for you below: Generally, this data shows that most people place some value in the use of technology, and only a small percentage do not care at all. The most popular choice, ‘often’, indicates that 40% of the people who responded are quite interested in using ICT, but do not always use. This might be because they are concerned about completing their homework or they just assume that it is an important thing to think about. The least popular option was ‘always’, and only 10% of people chose this. This might be because checking their Facebook and is very difficult and time-consuming or because most people aren’t very concerned. From this data, it can be concluded that for most people, use ICT and they take notice of when they are making choices.
