HOW POLLUTED WERE THE CITIES DURING THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION? By: Kiara Todhunter
My Sub Questions: • What were the causes of pollution during the Industrial Revolution? • What were the effects of pollution on people? • What were the living conditions of the Industrial Revolution like?
What were the causes of pollution during the industrial revolution? There are many causes that contributed to the pollution in the Industrial Revolution these causes include: • Coal- was the main item that contributed to the pollution in the Industrial Revolution. Coal was being burned, to run many of the new inventions brought on by the Industrial Revolution including the steam engine. When the coal was burned it released fossil fuels into the atmosphere making climate change as bad as it is today. • Mining- was a big cause of pollution because the miners would wreak ecosystems, litter machinery, and release chemicals and pollutants from the mines into rivers and streams. These problems killed off animals and polluted drinking water.
What are the effects today? • The effects today include; • Air pollution • Acid rain • Global warming Without the Industrial Revolution the world wouldn’t be as developed as it is today. People may still live off there own farms and not live in cities. Pros and cons of the Industrial Revolution: Pros: Less poverty now, more inventions that lead to the world being easier, and more conveniently close to other things when living in the city. Cons: Use up lots of natural resources, tons of pollution, and big effects on the environment/animals.
What were the effects of pollution on people? There were many things that effected the people during the Industrial Revolution. Pollution and the dirty cities was a big one. Some effects that pollution had on people include: • No clean air to breathe • Undrinkable water • Disease ridden cities The people now were more packed closer together, in dirty cities. People were getting diseases because the cities were so dirty. They were also getting sick due to dirty water and got health problems from the polluted air.
What were the living conditions in the Industrial Revolution? The living conditions of the Industrial Revolution were not so great. Very few people lived in the farms where it was not polluted. The majority of people lived in large cities cramped together in one bedroom apartments. People were completing for jobs that payed so low that there kids had to work as well. As I said before disease spread rapidly and the houses were all dirty and gross. The streets were made of mud which would stain and ruin usually your only pair of shoes. Drinking water was usually treated badly and almost undrinkable. Some cases of drinking water contained cholera and other diseases. Why people were getting sick was not known so people still continued to dump there waste into the water.
Conclusion: How polluted were the cities during the Industrial Revolution? In the Industrial Revolution the cities were very polluted. People got diseases easily due to being packed together. The roads were dirty and full of garbage and waste. The water was polluted due to overpopulation, carelessness, and coal mining. Mining and coal are big parts of pollution because when miners mined the coal they were not careful and let the dirt, coal, fossil fuels, mining equipment, explosives, etc. go down the rivers and pollute the water. The last big reasons the cities were polluted was, they made the factories in the cities and some factories produced smog that was put into the air making the air in the city really bad. The burning of coal for steam engines was also a big issue as well as oil refineries. •
Questions I now have after finishing this inquiry: DID THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION START CLIMATE CHANGE? WAS THE WORLD BETTER OFF BEFORE THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION? WHAT WOULD THE WORLD BE LIKE TODAY IF THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION DIDN’T HAPPEN? WHEN DID THE PEOPLE START NOTICING THAT THEY WERE HAVING A REVOLUTION?
