Opportunities • The job of teaching has changed and requires more and new personal attributes. • Teachers teach to their personal strengths, which may not match the evolving teaching jobs. • Matching the teacher with the job requires knowledge of the personal attributes specific to that job. • The business world knows that job satisfaction and retention is tied to knowledge, skills and personal attributes. Why should education be any different?
Facts you need to know! ¨ Nationally, over 25 -30% of all teachers leave the profession within three to five years of their first job ¨ After five years in a classroom, nearly 60 percent of teachers quit the profession. ¨ Almost 80 percent of the demand for teachers represents the need to replace experienced teachers, not to fill new classroom positions.
Why such huge turnover? ? ¨ Contrary to conventional wisdom, retirement is not an especially prominent factor in teacher turn over • 27 percent of teacher turnover accredited to teachers pursuing of other jobs • Another 29 percent leaving because of job dissatisfaction
Of 29% who left because of job dissatisfaction • 61 percent cited poor salary • Another 32 percent cite Poor Administrative Support
