Agriculture: land is used for growing crops or raising farm animals. Housing: land is used to build accommodation and places for people to live. Business and factories: land is used for manufacturing or making products. Land is used by different companies. Leisure: land is used for activities that people can do for fun or in their free time. Retail: land is used for shops and places to sell goods to the public. Transport: land is used for transport links such as motorways or railway lines.

Looking at maps If we look at a map, how can we tell how the land is being used? On a map, the names of buildings give us clues as to how the land might be used – names of shops, for example, would show where the land is used for retail.
