WHO AND UNICEF: ERADICATING POLIO • Established in 1988 • Over 2. 5 billion children vaccinated • 20 million volunteers • Global Polio Eradication Initiative • A partnership of 5 different organizations, including : §World Health Organization (WHO) §the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) §the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) • Main Goal: Polio-Free World
THE UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS - (UDHR) • The Universal Declaration of Human Rights § Signed on December 10 th, 1948 § An universal agreement on a comprehensive statement of inalienable human rights. § Consist of 30 articles or rights • Ratified by many countries
UN PEACEKEEPING MISSIONS • Stabilize countries in conflict and protect civilians • Support humanitarian assistance • Train local security forces • Almost 125, 000 personnel across 16 missions in 4 continents • Three Main Principals § § § Consent of the parties; Impartiality; Non-use of force except in self-defense and defense of the mandate.
