How does the type of exercise affect the heart rate?
Your heart rate can be measured by taking your pulse, which is the push of the blood moving in your arteries. Heart rate is measured in beats per minute, (bpm). Do you think the type of exercise will affect your heart rate? Your task Find out which exercise affects your heart rate the most. You will need : • Stopwatches/timers • PE Kits, suitable footwear for exercise • Clipboards to hold recording sheets, or science books • Pencils
Hypothesis What do you think will happen as a result? Variables What are you changing? What are you keeping the same?
You will need someone else to help you with this experiment. 1. Check you can both find your pulse. You can find this by using 2 fingers on your wrist or your neck. 2. Measure your resting heart rate by taking your pulse. You will need to count this for 15 seconds and then multiply your number by 4 to get your heart rate. Your partner will tell you when to stop and start counting. 3. Record your resting heart rate in the table on the blog. Your partner will also need to do this.
4. Now choose three different exercises. E. g. 50 star jumps, running on the spot for 2 minutes and skipping for 2 minutes. 5. Take it in turns to complete your first exercise. After this is done, record your heart rate by multiplying the number you count by 4. Record this on your table. Swap with your partner. 6. Important – wait 5 -10 minutes before completing the next exercise as your heartrate will need to be back to its normal pulse rate. 7. Repeat step 5 and 6 until all of your exercises are completed.

Conclusion What impact did doing different exercises have on your heartrate? Did it increase with a certain exercise? Why do you think this happened? Think about the circulatory system and what happens to your muscles during exercise. Write your conclusion in your blue book On the next slide is a little explanation if you’re finding it a little tricky.
Example Conclusion This is just an example… I have made it up! The exercise which caused my heartrate to increase the most was star jumps because this exercise requires lots of energy and oxygen for your legs and arms to move. In comparison to skipping, I needed more energy to lift myself off the ground and move my arms up and down. Therefore, more blood needed to be pumped around my body.
