How does exercise effect our heart rate?
What do we think?
What are we measuring?
Our heart rate is the number of times our heart beats per minute.
We’ll need to record our heart beats. How can we do this?
Steps to taking your pulse on your wrist You can easily check your pulse on the inside of your wrist, below your thumb. Gently place 2 fingers of your other hand on this artery. Do not use your thumb because it has its own pulse that you may feel. Count the beats for 10 seconds and then multiply the result by 6 to get the number of beats per minute.
We’ll need to record our heart beats. How can we do this? Count the number of times we can feel the pulse in 10 seconds and mutltiply by 6 to get beats per minute
How can we record the results?
Results as a table Activity Sitting Slow breathing Walking Jogging Jumping sprinting Beats in 10 seconds Beat per minute
Results as a bar chart
Let’s get going! You will need someone to do the timing or you can look at a clock
Where to carry out this investigation A room where there is space for movement without bumping into things. In the garden. Great activity to do in the park with an adult.
Activity 1 Stay sitting down. Sit comfortably Count your pulse for 10 seconds (someone can say start and stop). Record the amount on the sheet
Activity 2 Slow your breathing down – breath in for 2 seconds, hold your breath for 2 seconds and breath out for 2 seconds. Do this 5 times before measuring. Count your pulse for 10 seconds (someone can say start and stop). Record the amount on the sheet
Activity 3 Walk around a room or garden at a normal pace for 1 minute Count your pulse for 10 seconds (someone can say start and stop). Record the amount on the sheet
Activity 4 Jog around a room or garden for 1 minute Count your pulse for 10 seconds (someone can say start and stop). Record the amount on the sheet
Activity 5 Jump up and down for 1 minute Count your pulse for 10 seconds (someone can say start and stop). Record the amount on the sheet
Activity 6 Sprint around a room or garden for 1 minute Count your pulse for 10 seconds (someone can say start and stop). Record the amount on the sheet
Are the results accurate?
Pulse and exercise When you exercise parts of your body need an increased blood supply (more oxygen and nutrients) so your heart beats faster. You also breathe faster - to get more oxygen into your lungs, and to get rid of the carbon dioxide. You also get hot and sometimes flushed (or red faced).
How do I look after them? By doing exercise regularly: our hearts get fitter and bigger - better at pumping blood and not needing to work so hard or fast. our lungs get stronger and have increased capacity so we are able to take in more oxygen in a single breath. we will feel healthier.
