How do Species Change Over Time? Important Vocabulary
LS 1 CIA Vocabulary 1. Please open your Vocabulary Activity - LS 1 TJE or EF document. 2. Scroll down to #10 - #12 (or if creating flashcards), make 6 more slides. 3. Type the following 3 words into your document in the proper location. -extinction -fossil record -transitional form 1. Define them using your book (use google for transitional form).
Extinction Entry 1. What is the definition of extinction? Definition = an event that occurs when the last individual organism of a species dies.
Extinction Entry (cont. ) 2. Do some research to answer the following question: What percentage of species that have lived on Earth are now extinct? 3. Write the answer in your vocabulary document as: “The percentage of species extinct over Earth’s lifetime is: ____%” 99. 9
Fossil Record Entry 1. What is the definition of fossil record? Definition = a record of all the fossils ever discovered on Earth
Fossil Record Entry (cont. ) 2. Paleontologists are always looking to find new fossils to add to the fossil record. As a paleontologist, what type of rock would you want to explore in order to find fossils? (you can find the answer on page 192 in your book) A. igneous B. sedimentary C. metamorphic 3. Write the answer in your vocabulary document as: “The sedimentary best rock to find a fossil in is _____”
Extinction / Fossil Record Combo Entry *Combine concepts: What do you think the geologic record would look like if a species went extinct? In your extinction entry, add “Evidence of extinction in the geologic record is represented the disappearance in the fossil record by ____________. ”
Transitional Form Entry 1. What is the definition of transitional form? Definition = fossilized remains of a life form that exhibits traits common to both an ancestral group and its derived descendant group. 2. Why is it so hard to find transitional form fossils? 3. Write the answer in your vocabulary document as: “Transitional form fossils are hard to find because their characteristics are not optimal for survival so there was not many of them in existence. ”
How do Species Change Over Time? An illustrative timeline
Creating your illustrative timeline ● Think of something (a toy, a household appliance, a piece of equipment). . . any object really that has been around a while and has changed over time. ● Create a visual timeline showing its transformation. (just like transitional form fossils) ● Include a minimum of 5 individual pictures. ● Be sure to include the date for each picture ● A possible example is. . .

How do Species Change Over Time? The Missing Link
Transitional Form Fossils or organisms that show the intermediate states between an ancestral form and that of its descendants.
Transitional Form Fossils ● ● ● Transitional form fossils are sometimes called the “Missing Link”. They are the connection between old (ancestral) species and the new (descendant) species. There are not many of them, they are hard to find and therefore called “Missing”
Transitional Form Inference / Drawing 1. Carefully study the diagram to the left of a species change over time. 2. On your white sheet of paper, draw 3 squares and number them 1 -3 respectively. Big squares. . . use the whole page. 3. Draw the ancestral (ancient form #1) in box 1 and the present-day form (snake #5) in box 3. 4. In box 2, use information/clues from the diagram and draw what you think the species would look like at stage 3 (located at the question mark to the left). 5. On the back of your sheet, answer these questions: a. What types of environmental changes may have occurred for this species to transition from #1 to #5? b. (Infer / Hypothesize) what new changes could possibly occur to the environment and how would the species transition?
Proceeding Slides Not Used in 2019 ● ● ● don’t know how to use don’t know the assignment needs edited
Use slide assigned to you in class… Directions 1. Carefully study the diagram of species change over time you have been assigned to in class. 2. Fold your ½ sheet of paper into 6 frames. (instructions given to you in class) 3. Make a comic strip showing the ancestral (ancient) and present day forms of your species. Use frame 1 -4 for this. You may have to do some additional research. 4. Use the last two frames to show what you think would be the next two progressiosn of changes in the species. 5. In speech bubbles, explain how each change helped the species survive. 6. Color your comic strip.
