How do Humanists, Social Scientists and Scientists Use and Perceive Ebooks? (An IMLS funded Lib. Value Study) UIUC Research Showcase November 2015 Lynn Wiley University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Library

How do the researchers in the Humanities, Social Sciences and Sciences compare in ebook use and preferences? Two types of studies were used to determine how humanists, social scientists and scientists are currently using ebooks and their opinions concerning ebooks in their disciplines: • Demand-Driven Acquisition (DDA) via the ebrary platform for the Humanities and Social Sciences that also tracked choice of e vs P • And an analysis and categorization of use (type and amount) that also included a Science component (DDA via ebrary) • A local, UIUC survey of humanities, social sciences faculty and graduate students on ebooks.

Conclusions • What do all disciplines want? More ebooks, more current ebook titles, fewer restrictions on copying and printing. • Use of ebooks varies by discipline but more research is needed as the content and type of reading is different • If you provide ebooks in any discipline, they will be used! – Print is still an option for any user who needs to read a full length monograph, but for digital content with indexed chapters, TOCs and enhanced metadata, chapter level access is driving higher exploration and use.
