House Construction
Learning Standard 5. Construction Technologies Construction technology involves building structures in order to contain, shelter, manufacture, transport, communicate, and provide recreation. 5. 1 Describe and explain parts of a structure, e. g. , foundation, flooring, decking, wall, roofing systems.
Learning Objectives At the conclusion of lesson students will be able to: 1. Explain why a building structure needs a solid foundation 2. Describe & explain the parts of the floor system in a building 3. Describe & explain the parts of a wall system in a building 4. Describe & explain the parts of a roofing system in an building 5. Explain how each of these systems work together to provide shelter for people
A House… Provides people with shelter & storage
Foundation The part of the building that rests on the ground and supports the upper structure Without a solid foundation the building cannot be constructed properly it will be unstable
Once the foundation is finished the rest of the house can be built
Floor System
Center Beam Installed in the middle of the house to help the foundation support the upper structure The Center Beam can be made of wood or steel
Floor Joists Center Beam Series of evenly spaced boards that run from the front of the house to the back. They work with the Center Beam to support the floor
Floor Joists & Center Beam
Subfloor • The first layer of flooring • Nailed to the Floor Joists • Usually made from plywood or particleboard
Wall System
Wall Studs Series of evenly spaced pieces of lumber, (usually 2 x 4’s) that are used for the framework of walls
Sheathing • Nailed to wall framework • Encloses structure on the outside • Made of plywood or particleboard
Walls being put in place
Cross Section View of House If you want to remove a wall in a house you must make sure that it is not a WEIGHT BEARING wall
Siding Put on the outside for protection from the weather - attached to sheathing Wood shingles Vinyl Brick Outside windows & doors are also installed
Roof System
Roof • Keeps weather (precipitation) out • Stabilizes the walls
Truss • Prefabricated triangular framework that supports the roof • Allows the roof to be built quickly
Roof Decking Sheets of lumber (usually plywood) nailed to the outside of the roof trusses
Roof Shingles • Nailed to the roof decking • Installed from bottom to top • Weatherproofs the roof
The house is now Weatherproofed & Secure Interior work can begin
Insulation Material used to keep heat or cold from leaving or entering a building Most popular form is fiberglass Rolls made to fit between floor joists, ceiling joists and wall studs
Insulation In walls In ceilings
Inside Wall Covering Drywall: Inside covering of walls and ceilings, made from plaster and sturdy paper (commonly referred to as Sheetrock)
Inside Wall Covering Sheets are screwed to the walls and ceilings - cracks & screws are covered with tape & joint compound
Inside Wall Covering Walls may then be painted or covered with paneling or wallpaper Light fixtures & switches can also be installed
Interior Flooring: Usually the last to be completed so that it will not be damaged while other work is being done Can be wood, stone, tile or carpeting
