Hospital and Hospital management “Hospital is an establishment of temporary space to be occupied by the sick and injured , where they undergo appropriate treatment. ” “Hospital management is a collaborative process that assesses, plans, implements, coordinates, monitors and evaluates the options and services required to meet an individual’s health needs, using communication and available resources to promote quality, cost-effective outcomes in the hospital environment. ”
Evolution of hospitals in India Hospitals have known to exist from the time of Buddha(6 th century). The most magnificent of them were at the time of king Ashoka having labor rooms and children wards as first priority. Later in 16 th century allopathic medicines were introduced. The first scientifically developed hospital was built by the British at Madras , 1664.
Contd… 19 th century , the 1 st medical school was started in Calcutta. 20 th century saw the development of training institutes and also development of various new technologies , facilities , medicines and treatments.
Classification of hospitals Hospitals can be classified based on the following criteria. 1. Length of stay of the patient. 2. Clinical basis. 3. Ownership basis. 4. Objectives. 5. Size 6. Management. 7. System of medicine.
Commonly used classifications are: 1. Ownership basis. A. Public hospitals. B. Voluntary hospitals. C. Private homes. D. Corporate hospitals. 2. Management basis. A. Union governments. B. state governments. C. Local bodies. D. Autonomous bodies. E. Voluntary agencies

Facilities provided by the hospitals It could be mainly divided into, in patient and out patient services which includes, Emergency services. Medical, surgical, paeditrics. Maternity unit. Orthopaedic unit. Dental , ENT and ophatmology units neurology
