HOSA Competitive Events Update 2020 - 2021

CE UPDATES General Event Items • Formatting Language Changes for consistency in title pages, portfolios, and essays • Skills: Points increased for performing the skill on the correct “limb” as indicated in the scenario. When equipment is provided or supposed to be brought by the competitors, steps may not be verbalized for points. • Binder pockets have been eliminated from all applicable events. Additional pages have been added to the portfolio maximum pages to account for including material that was previously added via the binder pockets.

HEALTH INFORMATICS ▲ ▲ ▲ New Health Science test 75 questions in 90 minutes Management of Health Information and assimilation of technology in the healthcare setting

HEALTH PROFESSIONS

CLINICAL SPECIALTY ▲ Length of the skill video shown to judges is up to competitor and must be incorporated into the six-minute presentation.

NURSING ASSISTING & PERSONAL CARE ▲ ▲ ▲ The events now align with each other in regard to the skills. Three skills have been deleted from both events: Position Patient; Change a Patient’s Gown; and Discharging a Patient. Three skills have been added in their place: Admitting a Patient; Donning PPE; and Caring for an Ostomy. The DHO and Sorrentino books have been retired as the resources and they have been replaced by the following two: Dugan, Diana L. Nursing Assisting A Foundation in Caregiving, Hartman Publishing, Latest edition. Roe, Sue. The Nursing Assistant: Essentials of Holistic Care, The Goodheart. Wilcox Company, Inc. , Latest edition.

SPORTS MEDICINE ▲ ▲ Skill I Anatomical Landmark Identification timing has increased from 6 minutes to 7 minutes Skill II Joint Action and Maximum Range of Motion - points have been changed from 60 to 75 to account for correct spelling

VETERINARY SCIENCE ▲ ▲ Muzzle skill has been retired. Wrapping a surgical pack skill has been added.

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS EVENTS

CERT SKILLS ▲ CERT Skills has been aligned with the new release of CERT curriculum

PUBLIC HEALTH ▲ Round 2 presentation changed from 10 minutes to 9 minutes 2020 -2021 Topic: Reducing Health Disparities: Social Determinants of Health Can Help!

EPIDEMIOLOGY ▲ Time allowed for test changed from 120 minutes to 90 minutes

CPR & EMT ▲ The list of supplies brought by the competitor has been updated

PS & SS Prepared Speaking & Speaking Skills 2020 -2021 Annual Topic Unlock Your Potential

SPEAKING SKILLS ▲ Speech length has changed from 5 minutes to 4 minutes

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE ▲ The health assessment will be designed by competitors to align with their chosen SMART goal, as opposed to all competitors using the same pre-determined assessment

EXTEMP HEALTH POSTER ▲ Extemporaneous Health Poster is now a Middle School Division only event at ILC

RESEARCH POSTER PRESENTATION ▲ ▲ ▲ To replace EHP for Secondary and Postsecondary / Collegiate divisions, this event has been added Secondary competitors will pose a research question around a given health topic and develop a research poster showcasing their findings. Postsecondary / Collegiate competitors will also develop the research poster, but in addition will have an added presentation / thesis defense component.

BIOMEDICAL DEBATE ▲ ▲ ▲ Round 2 of Biomedical Debate will be a seeded bracket round (similar to HOSA Bowl) with seeding based on the average test score Debate format has been altered Debates will now be 15 minutes

BIOMEDICAL DEBATE Biomedical Debate 2020 -2021 Annual Topic Designer Babies: Parents should be allowed to genetically engineer their offspring

HEALTH EDUCATION ▲ Health Education presentation time has changed from 6 minutes to 5 minutes

PSA Public Service Announcement 2020 -2021 Annual Topic The Future of Healthcare – How HOSA is Making A Difference! ▲ The event will now be one round instead of two rounds

HOSA BOWL ▲ ▲ Teams are required to have four members During all buzzer rounds – team members will be designated A, B, C, D For the first 8 minutes of the round, questions will be be head-to-head match-ups with team member A vs A, B vs B and so on. For the last two minutes of the round, questions can be answered by any team member

HEALTH CAREER DISPLAY - MS ▲ ▲ The Middle School Division of Health Career Display has been changed to one round, instead of two. The Display Time for the Middle School Division has bene eliminated.
