Week 2 DO NOW: Monday: Pretend you are Curly’s boss who is disappointed in the progress of the construction project. What might you say to Curly? Tuesday: Explain how Roy and Beatrice’s relationship has changed since they first met. Wednesday: Vandalism is one way in which people react to a problem. What are some other ways people could react? Thursday: Beatrice describes her dad in chapter 10. Pick one of your parents and describe him/her. List some character traits as well.

Objectives: • To support your answers with details from the story when answering questions • To describe foreshadowing and relate it to the story

Foreshadowing when an author mentions or hints at something that will happen later in the story.

Hint Break the Word Apart FORE means ahead. A SHADOW is a glimpse of something without the complete details. Therefore, FORESHADOW means getting a glimpse of something before it happens.

An example using Little Red Riding Hood Once upon a time, there was a little girl who lived with her mother. Her mother asked her to take her old and lonely grandmother some food one day. "Don't stop along the way. Go straight to your Grandma's house and back. Don't talk to any strangers and watch out for the wolf in the woods! Now get along!"

An example using Little Red Riding Hood The underlined words provide an example of foreshadowing. Little Red Riding Hood’s mother is warning her about the wolf in the woods, which hints at what may happen next. Once upon a time, there was a little girl who lived with her mother. Foreshadowing Examples from the story: • Office Delinko sees the owl holes foreshadows that there may be people who care about the owls or that there may be a situation involving the owl • Despite falling asleep on the job, Officer Delinko is determined to find out who is committing the vandalism and why; this foreshadows that he is compassionate and cares and perhaps take a certain side to an issue • Roy’s bus suspension is lifted b/c it is unfair that he is being punished while Dana is not; Roy figures that tomorrow is good day to face the bully problems --- this foreshadows another confrontation with Dana
