HOMILETICS The Importance of Preaching What is Preaching? The difference between preaching and teaching is the basis of emphasis; biblical/theological, practical/cultural Biblical/theological Aspect Preaching called kerusso has to do with the kerygma (the basic gospel) 1 Corinthians 15: 3 through 1 Corinthians 15: 4 (KJV) 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: • evangelistic in nature • outside church gathering Teaching supposedly has to do with the didache (the body of doctrine and ethics meant for believers • doctrinal and ethical • performed in church assembling

Practical/cultural Aspect Preaching • a topical treatment of a text • communicates dogmatism or authority • leadership Teaching • an expository treatment of a text • more popular • leadership • more popular • looked on with great respect A widely quote paraphrased definition, “preaching is truth through personality”. Preaching is the communicating of biblical truth by man to man with the explicit purpose of eliciting behavioral change. Expository preaching is the communication of a biblical concept, arrived from and transmitted through a historical, grammatical, and literary study of a passage in its context, which the Holy Spirit first applies to the personality and experience of the preacher, then through him to his hearers. (note the prophet such as Amos, Hosea, and Micah)

Truths about preaching 1. Its content is God’s message to man, presented as such.

Truths about preaching 1. Its content is God’s message to man, presented as such. 2. The purpose of preaching is to inform, persuade, and call forth an appropriate response to the God whose message and instruction are being delivered. 3. The perspective of preaching is always applicatory 4. Authority is also fundamental to the notion of what preaching is 5. Preaching represents not only God’s authority, but also His presence and His power Why Preach? The Objective Response To Generate Faith Romans 10: 13 through Romans 10: 17 (KJV) 13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. 14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? 15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! 16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report? 17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

 • To save them that believe 1 Corinthians 1: 21 through 1 Corinthians

• To save them that believe 1 Corinthians 1: 21 through 1 Corinthians 1: 24 (KJV) 21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. 22 For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom: 23 But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; 24 But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. • That faith may be in the power of God 1 Corinthians 2: 4 through 1 Corinthians 2: 5 (KJV) 4 And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: 5 That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God. The Subjective Response The call to ministry – It is the assurance that gives a sense of steadfastness and stick-to-tiveness when unjustified criticism comes or failure seems likely. Jeremiah 20: 8 through Jeremiah 20: 9 (NIV) 8 Whenever I speak, I cry out proclaiming violence and destruction. So the word of the LORD has brought me insult and reproach all day long. 9 But if I say, “I will not mention him or speak any more in his name, ” his word is in my heart like a fire, a fire shut up in my bones. I am weary of holding it in; indeed, I cannot.
