Develop Your Own Argument -Raising the Drinking Age-

1) Carefully read the passage in the box below: (Teenage drunkenness costs the wider community a lot of money. )(This is firstly because of the cost to the NHS for emergency callouts )and (secondly because of the cost to the police in having to respond to youth crime and anti-social behaviour. )(These costs can be avoided by raising the buying age to 21. ) Therefore we should raise the age for buying ________________ alcohol in order to save this money. _____________ “Mark up” the passage by circling indicator words, putting brackets around reasons (and developed reasons e. g. evidence or examples) and underlining conclusions. Provide an argument map for the passage in the box below. 2) Here is a list of claims some of which can be used to support raising the age limit to 21 and some of which can be used to oppose this: a) Statistics show alcohol is related to crime therefore young crime rates will be reduced b) 18 year olds have been able to drink for years. It would be unfair to change this now. c) Will affect those over 18 s social life d) Over 18 s can already vote, drive … e) Young drink driving will be reduced. f) You are already classed as responsible and adult at 18. g) You could have a family of your own at 18. h) Reduce accident and emergency call outs by raising the age. i) It isn’t fair on those 18+ that drink responsibly. j) Reduces the number of young people suffering liver failure and other health problems. Put a tick next to those claims which could be used to support raising the drinking limit. Put a cross next to those claims which could be used to oppose raising the drinking limit.

3) Write a brief argument of your own against raising the drinking age.
