War industries Board was a government agency that helped increased industry production for the war effort Led by Bernard Baruch Had to balance price controls against war profits Congress passed the Food and Fuel Act which authorized the president to regulate the production and distribution of the food and fuel necessary for the war effort PROMOTION OF WAR
Wilson appointed Herbert Hoover to lead the Food Administration (FA) Imposed price controls to help increase production Hoover and Creel depended on Americans communities Coordinated posters and leaflets to help promote the war effort FA supported “Wheatless Mondays, Meatless Tuesdays, and Porkless Thursdays” PROMOTION OF WAR

Increase of industry demanded more labor but because of the war and the decline in immigration, labor was hard to come by Labor union membership have increased as well Main issue was wage BUSINESS DURING WAR
American Federation of Labor was now being led by Samuel Gompers which led to being an leader of the nation’s union trade movement Gompers was appointed as the leader of the National War Labor Board IWW also grown in 1916 and 1917 Women were moving from domestic jobs to clerical jobs African Americans were also moving from the south to the north which is called the Great Migration LABOR UNIONS
With an increase of women in the workforce Labor Department created the Women in Industry Service (WIS) Women were critical in helping the war effort by selling bonds, saving food, organizing benefits Key role in the success of the FA and the Women’s Committee of the Council of National Defense Promotion of prohibition which led to the passing of the 18 th amendment Caused because of the increase of morality during the war WOMEN’S SUFFRAGE
Espionage Act of June 1917 was passed to break down any antiwar sentiment Severe penalties if anyone found guilty of aiding the enemy, obstructing recruitment or causing insubordination in the armed forces Creation of the FBI Sedition Act was a law restricting the criticism of America’s involvement in WWI Eugene Debs gave a speech defending antiwar protesters and served in 32 months ESPIONAGE ACT
