Homecrest Presbyterian Church Worship of the Lord’s Day July 23 rd, 2017 16 th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Gathering Around the WORD Call To Worship (Psalm 8: 1, 3 -5) O Lord, our God, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens. When we look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars that you have established. What are human beings that you are mindful of them, mortals that you care for them? Yet you have made them a little lower than God and crowned them with glory and honor.
Gathering Hymn # 367 “Come, Ye Thankful People Come” Come, ye thankful people, come; raise the song of harvest home. All is safely gathered in, ere the winter storms begin. God, our Maker, doth provide for our wants to be supplied. Come to God's own temple, come; raise the song of harvest home.
Gathering Hymn # 367 “Come, Ye Thankful People Come” All the world is God's own field, fruit in thankful praise to yield, wheat and tares together sown, unto joy or sorrow grown. First the blade, and then the ear, then the full corn shall appear. Lord of harvest, grant that we wholesome grain and pure may be.
Gathering Hymn # 367 “Come, Ye Thankful People Come” For the Lord our God shall come, and shall take the harvest home; from each field shall in that day all offenses purge away; give the angels charge at last in the fire the tares to cast, but the fruitful ears to store in God's garner evermore.
Gathering Hymn # 367 “Come, Ye Thankful People Come” Even so, Lord, quickly come to thy final harvest home. Gather thou thy people in, free from sorrow, free from sin, there forever purified, in thy presence to abide: come, with all thine angels, come; raise the glorious harvest home!
Gathering Around the WORD Call to Confession (By: Amy Morgan) In each confession is a question: “What, then, should we do? ” Recognizing that our hope for a world that more accurately reflects God’s loving intentions cannot rely solely upon our choices and actions, through our confession and God’s grace, we can experience a new way of living in that hope.
Gathering Around the WORD Prayer of Confession (To Be Read Responsively) (Psalm 139: 1 -10, 23 -24) O LORD, you have searched us and known us. You know when we sit down and when we rise up; you discern our thoughts from far away. You search out our paths and our lying down, and are acquainted with all our ways. Even before a word is on our tongues, O LORD, you know it completely.
Gathering Around the WORD Prayer of Confession (To Be Read Responsively) (Psalm 139: 1 -10, 23 -24) You hem us in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon us. Such knowledge is too wonderful for us; it is so high that we cannot attain it. Where can we go from your spirit? Or where can we flee from your presence? If we ascend to heaven, you are there; if we make my bed in Sheol, you are there. If we take the wings of the morning and settle at the farthest limits of the sea, even there your hand shall lead us, and your right hand shall hold us fast.
Gathering Around the WORD Prayer of Confession (To Be Read Responsively) (Psalm 139: 1 -10, 23 -24) Search us, O God, and know our hearts; test us and know our thoughts. See if there is any wicked way in us, and lead us in the way everlasting.
Gathering Around the WORD Declaration of Forgiveness (Based on Jeremiah 29: 11) For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope. Let us worship and work as those who have been repaired and forgiven. Thanks be to God.
Gathering Around the WORD Gloria Patri Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen.
Gathering Around the WORD Passing of the Peace of Christ
Proclaiming the WORD Message to the Youth/ Prayer of Illumination
Proclaiming the WORD Scripture Reading (Genesis 28: 10 -19) 10 Jacob left Beer-sheba and went toward Haran. 11 He came to a certain place and stayed there for the night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place. 12 And he dreamed that there was a ladder set up on the earth, the top of it reaching to heaven; and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. 13 And the LORD stood beside him and said, “I am the LORD, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring;
Proclaiming the WORD Scripture Reading (Genesis 28: 10 -19) 14 and your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and all the families of the earth shall be blessed in you and in your offspring. 15 Know that I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you. ”
Proclaiming the WORD Scripture Reading (Genesis 28: 10 -19) 16 Then Jacob woke from his sleep and said, “Surely the LORD is in this place — and I did not know it!” 17 And he was afraid, and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven. ”
Proclaiming the WORD Scripture Reading (Genesis 28: 10 -19) 18 So Jacob rose early in the morning, and he took the stone that he had put under his head and set it up for a pillar and poured oil on the top of it. 19 a. He called that place Bethel.
Proclaiming the WORD Scripture Reading (Romans 8: 12 -25) 12 So then, brothers and sisters, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh — 13 for if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. 15 For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption.
Proclaiming the WORD Scripture Reading (Romans 8: 12 -25) When we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16 it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ — if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.
Proclaiming the WORD Scripture Reading (Romans 8: 12 -25) 18 I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory about to be revealed to us. 19 For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the children of God; 20 for the creation was subjected to futility, not of its own will but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and will obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God.
Proclaiming the WORD Scripture Reading (Romans 8: 12 -25) 22 We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labor pains until now; 23 and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. 24 For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what is seen? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.
Proclaiming the WORD (Genesis 28: 10 -19 and Romans 8: 12 -25) Adopted by Grace
