If you have any coins, buttons or small toys can you make arrays to match these number sentences? 3 x 2= 5 x 3= 4 x 5= 2 x 7=
Using your objects can you make these 2 arrays? • 4 x 2= 2 x 4= • What do you notice about the arrays? • What do you notice about the answer?
Where have you seen this before? Think back to when we were adding…… 4 + 2 = 6 2 + 4 = 6 (commutative law: numbers can be added in any order and you get the same answer) So when we are multiplying …. . 4 x 2 = 8 2 x 4 = 8 (commutative law) Is this always the case?
Can you check the commutative law please? If you know that 2 x 3 = 6 what else do you know? 3 x 2=6 We can check to see if this is true. We can draw 2 arrays to show these calculations. Now it’s your turn…. 2 x 3=6 3 x 2=6 Write the 2 number sentences and draw the 2 arrays for each of these: 2 x 5= 2 rows of 3 4 x 3= 3 rows of 2 5 x 4= Has this proven the commutative law?
