HOME LANGUAGE VS SCHOOL LANGUAGE Presented By Sankar Saha Roll No. - 39
Mother Language: Defination and Nature Ø Mother language is “The first language that you learned when you are a baby rather a language that you learned at school or an adult” - Cambridge English Dictionary. Ø This is the language which is readily faced and gradualy learned by children right after birth. Ø Mother language is the language of mind and the language of thinking and cognition. With this language a child grows into the society.
Importance of mother language: Ø A child develops his/her social recognition through mother language. Ø Mother language develops personality, value and intelligence among child. Ø Without the true knowledge of mother language one can’t fully acquint himself with own society, culture, civilization and history. Ø It helps to gather deep knowledge in any field of life. Ø It also serves as a gateway to the acquisition of second or third language.
Home Language: Ø The birth of a child declares the spontaneous inclusion of him/her to the society. While living in and with the family a child gets acquinted with the habit of language learning and imitation of it. In this time the child comes into the contact with the language spoken by his/her parents. Very soon the child begins to learn the language of parents. This domesticized language which is learned by a child marked as home language.
Nature of Home Language: Ø It is the language of parents of child. If the language of the parents is bengali, the home language of a child will be same. Ø The nature of the language spoken by the parents largely affects the home language of the child. Ø If the parents are bilingual, it is expected that the home language of a child will be bilingual in nature. Ø Multi-cultural society always brings some varieties in the home language of the learner. A child of this type of environment always gathers better communicative skills than others.
School Language: Ø The language that a child learns in school atmosphere is called school language. It is almost controlled by the language of text that they read and learn in classroom. In contrast to home language, school language is more polished and highly acceptable. School language is very important for the cognitive development of the learner. School language closely resembles to standard language.
Nature of Shool Language: Ø All the textbooks of school curriculum are normally written in standard language. As a result, school is just the place to learn the standard language. Ø The language of a teacher is the most spontaneously delivered standard language which is enriched with knowledge. Ø Textbooks of specific curriculum and the classroom of teacher are right destinations where learners get the scope of acquinting with standard language. Ø School language prepares one as well-learned and sweet spoken. Ø The quality of school language must be kept under the strict observation by both school management and classroom teacher.
