HOLY SPIRIT Characteristics Where do we first read about the Holy Spirit in the Bible? In the second verse of Genesis! “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. ” Genesis 1: 1 -2

HOLY SPIRIT Is the Holy Spirit a Divine Being? Some would say, NO! “…God’s holy spirit is not a God, not a member of a trinity, not coequal, and is not even a person… It is God’s active force… may be likened to a radar beam. ” THE WATCH TOWER – July 15, 1957

HOLY SPIRIT Let’s See What the Bible Says! As we go through these verses, notice the use of the personal pronoun, such as “He”, “His”, etc. which designates the Spirit as a person, not an “it”, “thing” or just an “influence”.

HOLY SPIRIT Holy Spirit – Characteristics of a Person Speaks and Hears John 16: 13 “However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. ”

HOLY SPIRIT Holy Spirit – Characteristics of a Person Blasphemed Matthew 12: 31 -32 Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come. ”

HOLY SPIRIT The Holy Spirit Not Only Has Characteristics of a Person But Also Has Characteristics of God!

HOLY SPIRIT Holy Spirit – Characteristics of God Eternal Hebrews 9: 14 “How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? ”

HOLY SPIRIT Holy Spirit – Characteristics of God All-Knowing I Cor. 2: 10 -11 “But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. ”

HOLY SPIRIT Holy Spirit – Characteristics of God All-Present Psalm 139: 7 -10 “Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend into heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there Your hand shall lead me, and Your right hand shall hold me. ”

HOLY SPIRIT The Holy Spirit Not Only Has the Characteristics of God But Does the Work of God!

HOLY SPIRIT Holy Spirit – Does Work of God Providence Psalm 104: 27 -30 “These all wait for You, that You may give them their food in due season. What You give them they gather in; You open Your hand, they are filled with good. You hide Your face, they are troubled; You take away their breath, they die and return to their dust. You send forth Your Spirit, they are created; and You renew the face of the earth. ”

HOLY SPIRIT Holy Spirit – Does Work of God Miracles Matthew 12: 28 “But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, surely the kingdom of God has come upon you. ”

HOLY SPIRIT Holy Spirit – Does Work of God Miracles I Cor. 12: 7 -11 “But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit,

HOLY SPIRIT Holy Spirit – Does Work of God Miracles I Cor. 12: 7 -11 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills. ”

HOLY SPIRIT The Holy Spirit is not: an “it” a “thing” a “feeling” a “hunch” a “radar beam” or just an “influence”

The Holy Spirit is: God!

THE HOLY SPIRIT IS PART OF THE GODHEAD WHICH INCLUDES…

God the Father! God the Son! God the Holy Spirit!

“When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. ” Matthew 3: 16 -17
