Direct student services • Enhanced Development of the Graduate Experience – outcomes-based skills development across three domains (learning and research; management and responsibility; and communication and teamwork), 100 workshops/programs offered each year, all offered online for distance/adult learners • Self-help supports – preparing for new students for grad school, grounded in literature on undergrad persistence, intended for first-generation students • Entrepreneurship Training Program – embedded, externally funded coordinator to support grad students interested in entrepreneurship and research commercialization • Consultations with graduate student societies – annual meetings with faculty/school/departmental grad societies to address unit- and campusspecific issues • Drop-in academic and financial advising – SGS managers always available oneon-one meetings with all graduate students, and on call after hours and on weekends; one-day turnaround time for emails, calls, and all routine work www. mun. ca

Faculty/staff supports • Program in Graduate Student Supervision – blended learning, one-semester training program for new faculty members interested in supervision • SGS Supervisor Institute – certificate program with monthly, topic-based workshops for mid-career faculty supervisors • Faculty/staff workshops – quarterly PD workshops to support grad students (eg, wellness and self-care, intercultural communications, Indigenous cultural diversity training) • Diversity statement and committee – acknowledge the importance of different backgrounds and views in teaching and research, guide the work of academic and support staff to remove barriers and improve supports for all grad students www. mun. ca

Interdepartmental collaboration • Centre for Innovation, Teaching, and Learning – offers Teaching Skills Enhancement Program (a blended learning, 2 -semester program to introduce grad students to teaching) and TA Training Program (a one-day workshop to train new grad student TA’s) • Student Wellness and Counselling Centre – employ embedded counselling intern in the grad school specifically supporting graduate students (one-on-one and group sessions) • Aboriginal Resource Office – workshops for prospective Indigenous students, application fee waiver, supports matching students with supervisors • Internationalization Office and Student Life – cost-share advisor to support grad students with partners and dependents; orientation for grad students with families • Department of ESL – offers 10 workshops each semester focused on improving different aspects of production skills (speaking and writing) • Writing Centre – offers thesis writing retreat and evening writing clinics for grad students in research programs • Graduate Students’ Union – offers emergency bursary and emergency tuition relief programs for grad students in crisis www. mun. ca

Holistic review in grad admissions • Holistic review – process by which programs consider a broad range of characteristics when reviewing applications for admissions (CGS, 2016) • Multiple non-cognitive factors have been considered, including motivation (Gray et al. , 2016), leadership (Choi et al. , 2018), self-concept/self-efficacy (Denissen et al. , 2007), attitude toward learning (Virtue et al. , 2017), creativity (Sternberg, 2008), persistence/perseverance (Egalite et al. , 2016), selfregulation/self-control (Duckworth, 2010) • In 2018, SGS received funding from the Collaborative Applied Research in Economics (CARE) initiative to develop an enterprise-wide solution for holistic review • Involved consultations across three campuses, site visits, environmental scan, and literature review • New applicant metadata to include: lived experience, non-cognitive aspects (conscientiousness, grit, achievement motivation, self-efficacy), detailed applicant records www. mun. ca
