I. Introduction A. An unusual request: Think like a Pharisee 1. A brief review of Old Testament holiness a. Definition: God’s exclusive excellence b. Implications: 1) Sinful men must keep their distance from a holy God. 2) Israel (God’s holy nation) must keep separate from the Gentiles. 2. Crisis: the coming of Christ (Mark 3: 22 -30) a. Jesus seems to break all the rules b. Jesus claims (& accepts) praise and worship c. Jesus strongly attacks Pharisees and their version of holiness.

I. Introduction B. How important is this conflict? 1. It explains the intensity of the opposition of Judaism to the Lord Jesus & to the apostolic preaching of the gospel. 2. The purity of the gospel & sanctification are at stake (e. g. Galatians) 3. This issue helps us define the relationship between Judaism & Christianity, between the O. T. and the N. T. a. Matthew 15; Mark 3: 22 -30 b. Acts 10 -11, 15 c. Romans / 1 and 2 Corinthians d. Galatians C. My approach in this message

II. So what is the solution to the conflict? A. Jesus is the Holy One of God. B. Jesus did not come to abolish the Law, but to fulfill it (Matthew 5: 17 -18). C. Jesus did not come to “patch” the Old Testament system (Mark 2, esp. vss. 18 -22). D. The reasons for separation in the O. T. 1. Men from God: to preserve men’s lives, not God’s holiness (see Romans 1: 23; James 1: 13). 2. Israel from Gentiles: protect the corruptible Israelites from the impurity of the Gentiles. E. The source of sin is internal, not external. * 1. Matthew 15: 16 -20; Mark 7: 14 -23. 2. Matthew 5: 21 -48

II. So what is the solution to the conflict? F. The solution is not to attempt to reform man (by striving harder to keep the Old Covenant), but to create a New Covenant & a new man. 1.
