Fifth Grade Reading: Expository Text Writing: Expository Text Math: Fractions with all operations; Financial Literacy Science: Physical Properties of Matter; Mixtures and Solutions Social Studies: Free Enterprise in the United States Art and Music Performance: December 11 th at 6: 30 pm How Can I Help My Child? • Encourage your child to read nightly for 20 minutes • Practice multiplication facts Counselor’s corner This month’s counseling focus is all about showing compassion with our words and actions. The Kindness Crew will begin collecting toiletries to help our student and families in need. More information is to come. We will also be using Career Cruising across all grade levels to learn more about college and career options after high school. Kinder: Handling Waiting First Grade: Identifying Feelings Second – Fifth Grade: Showing Compassion -Your Counselor, Mrs. Thompson Specials Corner Music: This month in music, the Kindergarteners will be learning to use their voices to sing melodies up and down the scales. First grade will be introduced to reading music by learning about the lines and spaces. Second grade will explore the pentatonic scale using their voice and instruments. Fourth grade will focus on learning to play recorders. Upcoming Performances: 5 th grade: “Music at the Movies, ” Tuesday, December 11 th at 6: 30 pm 3 rd grade: “December Dreams, ” Tuesday, December 18 th at 6: 30 pm Art: Williams artists will be focusing more on the seven elements of art. Every grade level will learn or revisit this list of the components that make up visual art. The elements of art are: line, shape, color, form, texture, space, and value. We will also create a Christmas ornament! PE: For the month of December we will focus on the following: • • • Basketball Volleyball Soccer Safety PE reminders: 1. Everyone MUST wear sneakers for safety on their PE days!!! 2. Girls should wear shorts under dresses if they have PE that day. 3. If a student has a medical condition or injury, please send a note/medical excuse. 4. If student is missing more than 3 PE classes (one week) a Doctor’s note is required! 5. No big jewelry is allowed during PE for safety reasons, but can be taken off before class starts. Health Spot Nikki Lindsey, RN Welcome to December! I hope that you all are staying healthy. One way to stay healthy is by requesting that you keep your student at home if they are sick. The district guideline are listed for you to review. It is important for you to follow these guidelines to help maintain the wellness of our school family. The Dallas Care. Van will not be available to utilize for the months of December and January in Grand Prairie. It will be available again in February 2019. Clinic News Items: State required screenings are wrapping up during the month of December. If you have received a referral letter or call from the clinic for a failed test, please be sure you take care of this as soon as possible. If you have misplaced a referral for additional testing, please contact the clinic. All students must be fever free for 24 hours without the aid of fever reducing medication before returning to school. Signs or symptoms of acute illness, serious accident/injury; Vomiting (not related to a single event such as gagging, positioning, mucus, running after eating, or eating spicy food); All students must be free from vomiting for 24 hours without the aid of any medication before returning to school. Diarrhea of two or more loose watery stools; All students must be free from diarrhea for 24 hours without the aid of any medication before returning to school. Asthma symptoms that do not respond to prescribed medication or no prescribed medication is available for treatment of asthma symptoms; Diabetes with a blood sugar greater than 400 and positive ketones or inadequate supplies to treat diabetes at school; Uncontrolled coughing; Pink eye or purulent conjunctivitis (defined as pink or red conjunctiva with white or yellow eye discharge). The student must receive treatment for 24 hours before returning to school or provide a note from a health care provider stating that the condition is not contagious and the student may return to school; Live head lice or live nits. Student must be rechecked after treatment and be issued a note to re-enter class.
