Purpose HIW provides the citizens of Wales with independent and objective assurance of the quality, safety and effectiveness of healthcare services, making recommendations to healthcare organisations to promote improvements *citizens – patients, service users, relatives, carers, employees, policy-makers 2
Dental Inspections – the journey so far • Stakeholder Reference Group established including representatives from LHBs, WG, PHW, BDA, GDC and Deanery • Methodology and reporting style developed • Clinical Dental Lead and Dental Reviewers appointed • Pilot inspection undertaken to test HIW’s inspection processes • 2014/15 inspection programme launched – 75 practices 3
Inspection Process • Approx 8 weeks notice of an inspection • Inspection team - HIW inspection manager + dentist • 4 domains: • patient experience • delivery of the standards • management and leadership • environment • Immediate verbal feedback on the day 4
After the inspection • 2 days after inspection - Immediate Action letter sent to practice • 3 weeks after inspection - Draft inspection report sent to practice for factual accuracy check and response to improvement plan • Practice responds within 2 weeks • Finalised report with any response to improvement plan sent to Health Board and CHC under embargo • 3 months after inspection - Final report including completed improvement plan published bilingually on HIW website 5
What have we found? Examples Immediate Action points: Training requirements not met – IR(ME)R and CPR Incorrect equipment being used – eg endodontic files not single use No maintenance certificates – autoclave and radiographic No daily checks for autoclave Common findings: Patients – happy with service received; regular patient feedback? Records - mouth cancer screening; record of treatment options; radiograph justification Complaints – procedure; display; no log of verbal complaints Decontamination – compliance with WHTM 01 -05 6
Feedback from practices who have been inspected Different from the DRS inspection Not confrontational Engaging and beneficial to both my team and myself Good and constructive It’s positive that we’re being inspected a dentist because they know the reality of practice Good that you’re speaking to patients to get their view Didn’t cause us much disruption at all 7
