FATHER OF EXISTENTIALISM Soren Kierkegaard – Father of Existentialism o A Danish philosopher, author, and theologian o Engaged to Regine Olsen, but ended the relationship before the wedding. Relationship affected him & his work greatly o Dies suddenly at age of 42 in Copenhagen o Notable ideas: Three Spheres of Human Existence, Angst, Knight of Faith, Leap of Faith
Kierkegaard’s “Either/Or” Either/Or was Kierkegaard’s first major work. As you can see, it was split into two sections. The first part is the aesthetic stage of existence and the second part is in regards to the ethical stage of existance.
The Myth of Sisyphus • • Kierkegaard and Nietzsche, a fellow philosopher, considered the act of making free choices on key values and beliefs essential in order to change, or create, one’s identity “ "The Myth of Sisyphus" (1942), Albert Camus uses the analogy of the Greek myth of Sisyphus (who is condemned for eternity to roll a rock up a hill, only to have it roll to the bottom again each time) to exemplify the pointlessness of existence, but shows that Sisyphus ultimately finds meaning and purpose in his task, simply by continually applying himself to it” (The Basics of Philosophy, Existentialism)
Sisyphus is finding his own meaning in life!
