Plessy vs. Ferguson 1896 State of Louisiana gave the right to “seperate but equal” rairoad cars, recognizing segregation laws passed for racial segregation in public schools
Public Education of Chinese Immigrants 1905 U. S. Supreme Court required the extent of public education for children of Chinese immigrants
Smith Hughes Act 1917 Provided funding for vocational education Job skill training was out from under the control of trade unions through apprenticeships
Catholic Schools Validated 1925 Supreme Court ruled that states could not compel Catholic children to attend public school.
Educational Testing Service 1948 Merged several predecessor testing services Carl Brigham (originator of SAT) did research that prove the imbecility of immigrants
Brown vs. Board of Education 1954 Supreme Court ruled that racial segregation violates the fourteenth amendment of the U. S. Constitution
National Defense Education Act 1958 Direct response to the launching of Putnik by the Russians which emphasized math and science.
Civil Rights Act 1964 Banned discrimination on the basis of race in all federally funded programs Head Start launched as part of the War on poverty
Elementary and Secondary Education Act 1965 Have the federal government the right to withhold funding for noncompliance Congress renewed every few years
American Colonial Period Mid 1970's Tolerant Quakers established the first school which welcome all regardless of sex, religion, or race
Desegregation and Busing 1970's Neighborhood schools were often divided by race Forced integration led to busing students to other schools
Title IX 1972 Prohibited public schools from discriminating on gender basis Expanded school athletic programs for girls
The Computer Revolution Around 1977 - 1983 Computers became less expensive, more available, and essential Education became available to the student any convenient time and place
Elementary and Secondary Education Act 1994 Renewed under Clinton required states to come up with content standards, assessments, and definition of adequate programs to measure children's progress
No Child Left Behind 2001 Created to encourage and enforce graduation
