History of Education Timeline By: Heidi Chester 1 st 8/31/16 -9/8/16
Public Schools Public schools were started by Rev. John Cotton. It was started in 1635. It was called Boston Latin School.
Benjamin Franklin started a secondary school. He started the first public library in 1773. This library helped people have more knowledge in education.
Horace Mann served as first secretary of Mass. state board of education in 1837. He worked to established free public education for every boy and girl. He improved public schools. He is known for his policy on free elementary schools for all. Mann also funded ‘normal’ schools to help prepare elementary teachers.
Brown v. The Board of Education Segregation was in the schools. In 1914, court ruled that ‘separate but equal’ schools was unconstitutional. The Brown V. The Board of Education helped the i court come to this decision.
Dick and Jane Readers These books helped young children , earn basic reading skills and other basic skills. These were popular in the 1930 s.
The Civil Rights Act of 1964 ended segregation in public places. The Court ruled the ‘separate but equal’ was unconstitutional. This lead to having black in an all white school and vise versa.
Desegregation Having desegregation in public places made a huge difference in education. They desegrated schools in 1964.
Secondary Education Act of 1965 This Act helped young children with low income, and/or their family cannot afford to send their child to school.
Title IX helped higher education for young boys and girls. This title helped young girls achieve certain dreams that they wouldn't be able to achieve because they were a girl. Title IX helped young girls have an equal opportunity to a higher education. They did this in 1972.
The Vocational Rehabilitation Act of 1973 This act helped protect the rights of children with disabilities. It showed people how far the school systems would go to make sure that your their children got a good reasonable education.
Goals 2000 These goals were to help have young children learn even more with what they are learning.
Thomas Jefferson believed that in order to pack part in the government, you had to be educated. He also believed in making free public schools everywhere that way everyone would get a chance to learn.
No child left behind act The goal of this act was to improve the performance in schools. This act was passed in 2001. This act requires that all children from different ages must be taught basic learning skills.
