What’s this course about? • We study: • Conflict and tension between the wars, looking at attempts to keep the peace after WW 1 and the origins and outbreak of WW 2 • America 1920 -73 which includes the Roaring Twenties, Great Depression, American popular culture, the civil rights movement and other protest groups. • Britain and health 1000 to present day which includes medieval medicine and disease such as the Black Death; how they started to prevent disease such as Jenner and the smallpox vaccine, and the discovery of germs and developments in surgery and public health. • Normans 1066 -1100 (Battle of Hastings, feudalism and medieval life) OR Restoration England 1660 -1685 (the Great Plague, the Great Fire of London, Charles II’s court and culture). .
What does the exam look like? The knowledge and skills gained in History are incredibly valuable! Students: • answer questions on sources and different interpretations then evaluate their reliability. • use their own knowledge to describe and explain historical events. • Put forward different points of view and make a judgement on it.
Where does it get me? • After taking GCSE History you can go on to study it at A level. In fact the GCSE allows progression to all post-16 courses! • A grade 5 is required for progression onto A level History • History is a well respected qualification which leads on to many different career opportunities due to the skills which you will have learnt, e. g. the law, business, teaching, journalism.
