History Established in 1922 as a humble technical school, Makerere University is one of the oldest and most prestigious Universities in Africa. In January of that year, the school, which was later renamed Uganda Technical College, opened its doors to 14 day students who began studying Carpentry, Building and Mechanics. The College soon began offering various other courses in Medical Care, Agriculture , Veterinary Sciences and Teacher Training. It expanded over the years to become a Center for Higher Education in East Africa in 1935. In 1937, the College started developing into an institution of higher education, offering post-school certificate courses. PRESENTED BY AJALA PENINAH

Makerere University is located on Makerere Hill which is one of the many hills on which Kampala, the Capital City of Uganda, is built. The main Campus is about 5 km to the North of the City Centre covering an area of 300 acres

The Makerere university cultural gala aims at promoting unity among students through appreciation of their diverse cultures. In addition to its primary role as an academic library, it also serves as the national reference library and the legal depository of all works published in Uganda. § Makerere University is home to a fully fledged Police Station with officers of the Uganda Police Force who regularly patrol the campus. § The Police Officers work closely with Campus Security personnel to maintain law and order as well as man security checks at the campus and building entrances. § The Chief Security Officer, who reports to the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Finance and Administration), is the overall in-charge of Campus security. He is assisted by the OC Station Makerere University Police as well as other Deputies.
Some of the innovations by mak students Makerere Student Develops App that detects Pneumonia. Because pneumonia has claimed hundreds of lives in Uganda every year, a group of students of Makerere University Olivia Koburongo, Brian Turyabagye, Besufekad Shifferaw Viola Akangumya and Angella Namwase saw it fit and came up with an app, Mama-Ope, that helps diagnose the disease earlier in young children.
