History and Culture of the Americas Native American Indians
Arrival into the Western Hemisphere �Archaeologists believe that various tribes of people migrated out of mainland Asia into North America by way of Alaska. �This occurred between 40, 000 B. C. and 17, 000 B. C. when sea levels were low.
Widespread migration �These various tribes over the course of 20, 000 years were able to spread throughout and settle in North America, Central America, and South America. �By the time the 1 st European explorers came to the western hemisphere, there were around 450 tribes living in North America.
Language �The indigenous populations of North America did not have written languages which is why there are no records of their encounters with European colonists. �Spoken languages were, however, very diverse and complex. Some were so complex that Navajo Indians were used their language as an unbreakable code against the Japanese.
