Truman Doctrine n President Truman said in 1947, “I believed that it must be the policy of the U. S. to support free peoples who are resisting subjugation by armed minorities or by outside pressures. ”

n The United States helped Greece and Turkey to resist communism.

“containment” n This idea was articulated by George F. Kennan. n “Containment” means that the U. S. government exercises power to counter Soviet pressure (=communism) whenever it develops.

Marshall Plan n In 1947 the U. S. sent more than $12 billion to Europe. n The U. S. government set up a Displaced Persons Plan under which some 300, 000 Europeans (including many Jews) were granted American citizenship.

Korean War (1950 -1953) n South Korea vs. North Korea The U. S. China (Soviet Union) Over 2 million Koreans were killed.

The Vietnam War n 1950 Truman granted military aid to France for its war against communist revels in Indochina. n 1955 The Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam) was proclaimed with the support of the U. S.

n 1970 A protest against the war took place at Kent State University in Ohio. 4 students were killed by national guards n 1973 The last American ground troops left Vietnam.

n 1974 Vietcong and North Vietnamese forces overran south Vietnam. n 1974 President Ford called the war “finished. ”
