Slavery 1660 s �Slavery starts taking place in the British American colonies. Colonists start to construct laws called slave codes. These “slave codes” gave little liberty to the slaves. Some examples of slave codes are: not being able to have weapons, never leaving the plantation without permission, never lifting a hand against a white person (even in self-defense), not being able to read and write, and their owners had the right to regularly search slave residences for “suspicious activities. ”

Jamestown Founding �In the year 1607, a joint stock company named the Virginia Company was assigned to go to the new world and make a colony. The Virginia Company did this because the king thought the new world had gold. So, the Virginia Company got to finance trips, named it Jamestown and became the first colony in the Americas.

The First African American Slave Landed in Jamestown, Virginia (1619) �The African American slave arrived in Virginia at Point Comfort, on the James River, late in August 1619. There, “ 20 and odd Negroes” from the ship White Lion from English were sold in exchange for food and they were transported to Jamestown, where they were going to be sold again into slavery. The number of Virginia’s slaves increased to thirty two by 1620, but then dropped by 1624. Soon afterwards, the Trans. Atlantic slave trade would become a vast empire connecting three continents. By 1628, a shipload of 100 Angolans were sold as slaves in Virginia.

The First session of the first legislative assembly in Jamestown, Virginia (1619) � In Jamestown Virginia in 1619, the first elected legislative assembly in the New World which was called the House of Burgesses. Twenty-two representatives from the colony of Jamestown were chosen and John Pory was the assembly’s speaker. Also, the laws created by the people had to be approved by the London Company and most of the other laws decided were mostly about gambling, drunkenness, and idleness throughout the few six days. This assembly was first discussed and planned out in 1619 on July 30 th in the colony of Jamestown in Virginia. The House of Burgesses was created so that laws could be created in Jamestown with all agreement from the public with twenty-one people to decide what laws should be created. This also helped smooth the busy schedule of Jamestown from one headache to the other, so that way more labor would be completed while a committee of people would think about the laws that must be created. In the committee, the twenty-one representatives reasoned with one another about a certain law being passed and what shall it be about, after deciding what it would be about and if it should be passed, the London Company must first agree on it since they had established Jamestown. That was the first session of the first legislative assembly in 1619 Jamestown, Virginia.

(1663) �In 1663, there was a serious problem in Virginia about a slave conspiracy and it involved whites, blacks, and an indentured servant. The slaveholders sent their slaves to the forest to hide in order to escape taxes since they were being sold. This occurred in the colonial America in Gloucester County, Virginia around the year 1663. This conspiracy occurred since an indentured servant betrayed the plan of white servants and negro slaves working together in Virginia. Also, the slaves refused to return to their own masters in order to make their own nations and to become independent from their masters. When slaveholders let them free, masters were furious and tried looking for them but they went into the fores, there they hid from the masters to the slaves could find barren land to start a new free life of theirs.

Charleston, South Carolina was established (1663) �Charleston, South Carolina was founded in 1663; it was named after Charles IX, King of France. In 1663 King Charles II send out a group of eight English gentlemen who become known as the Lords Proprietors to settle. This territory was stolen by Charles II who claimed it to Lord Clarendon, Sir William Berkley, Sir George Carteret, and four others with ample powers to settle and govern it. In 1670, settlers arrived at the Ashley River and established Charleston. They had made this settlement since the king wanted more land for himself and to gain more power from other rulers. He basically planned out what to do which was to send explorers to find land big enough for his power to grow. Therefore, he sent the men who found the area and finally they had created the astonishing Charleston in South Carolina. This part had been thought of in 1663 after trying to establish and organize Charleston in 1670. The harbor of Charleston was a big part in US history and also was a big help in the civil war.

Bacon’s Rebellion �A man named Nathaniel Bacon led a rebellion against officials on the colony of Virginia in the year 1676. Nathaniel Bacon led this rebellion because he wasn’t allowed to trade furs with Indians and so, he fought back ultimately burning down Jamestown. Nathaniel rebels against the people in Virginia by killing and defeating various Indian tribes.
