FEVER 1793 Fictional Story: Mattie Cook lives above the family coffee shop with her mother and grandfather. BUD, NOT BUDDY Fictional Story: Ten-year-old Bud is a run-away orphan on a mission. His mother never told him who his father was, but she left Bud some clues before he died. Some of those clues included posters of jazz musician, Herman E. Calloway, and his famous band, the Dusky Devastators of the Depression! Bud believes those posters will lead to his father. He decides to hit the road and find this mystery man.

NUMBER THE STARS Fictional Story: Ten-year-old Annemarie Johansen and her best friend, Ellen Rosen, live in Denmark during the Nazi Occupation. Nazi soldiers are on every street corner, there are food shortages, and the people of Denmark are required to darken their windows every evening. One day, the Jewish families receive word that the Germans are going to relocate all the Jews in Denmark. Since Ellen is Jewish, the Johansens take her in and pretend she is part of their family. Not only do the Johansens save Ellen, they try to save many Jews by helping them escape to Sweden.

WHAT IS A NARRATIVE? �A narrative or story is a report of connected events, real or imaginary, presented in a sequence. The word derives from the Latin verb narrare, "to tell", which is derived from the adjective gnarus, "knowing" or "skilled" � In your story, the narrator will tell the story in FIRST PERSON point of view (I, me, we) or THIRD PERSON point of view (he, she, character names)

SET UP YOUR STORY � What is the CLIMAX of the story? (Should be an event from history) � How will you explain the HISTORICAL SETTING? (1776 Yellow Fever epidemic) � What did people wear? What did they talk about? What was going on in the world? What movies, books, songs, people were popular? � How will you show the PHYSICAL SETTING? (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) � What was Philadelphia like in 1776? Where will your main character live? Where does the climax take place? What does the character see? What buildings would readers recognize?

MAIN CHARACTERS � Who is the protagonist of your story? (main character, “good guy”) � Who is the antagonist of your story? (villain, cause of conflict) � Any real characters from history? � By the end of your story, the main character needs to show growth and development. How will he/she CHANGE? � Your main character cannot die- this would defeat the purpose of a narrative!
