Hires boreal peatland type mapping allows improved assessment
Hi-res boreal peatland type mapping allows improved assessment of carbon stores and fluxes with disturbance Bourgeau-Chavez, Endres, Powell, Battaglia, Benscoter, Turetsky, Kasischke and Banda published April 2017 Canadian Journal of Forest Research Classification Methodology Image Stack Poor Fen Open Fen 2010 Wooded Bog Background: Peatlands store large amounts of C belowground but their spatial distribution on the landscape is largely unknown. Two peatland types: bogs and fens differ in hydrology, chemistry and Cstorage, but are often floristically similar. To distinguish them in the field can be difficult as with remote sensing, but using Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) we are able to distinguish the seasonal hydrological differences that exist between them (bogs are rain-fed and isolated, whereas fens are connected) Landsat Multi.
