Origins of Hip Hop Hip-hop originated in the Bronx area of New York in the 70 s. Its vocal origins lie in the Jamaican 'toasting' tradition. Toasting is a cross between talking and rhythmic chanting . Black DJs such as Grandmaster Flash and the father of hip hop, DJ Kool Herc extended the instrumental by mixing between two identical copies of the same record. Some of the DJs rapped over the top of the breaks. Many of the dancers would normally get up during the breaks and do many sorts of things, for example, spinning around with one hand, upside down flips and generally dancing at quite a fast pace.

Where Hip Hop got it’s name The word hip hop can be traced back many years when rapping was really all about MCing. In the days before Rapper’s Delight, the main job of an MC was to keep the crowd engaged, whether it would be through chanting words or other techniques such as call and response, all of these were just methods to keep the crowd engaged. Hip-hop combines two slang terms. Hip, which means “in the know, ” has been a part of African American vernacular since the late nineteenth century. And the word hop is from the dancers that always tend to do a sort or hop, whilst dancing.

Hip Hop Influence Hip-hop was also greatly influenced by party records. The first ever rap song was considered to by Rapp Dirty in 1965 by blowfly who was a musician and a comedian born in Cochran (usa) on 1939. Another person who influenced hip hop was Rudy Ray Moore, who is known as Dolemite, whose dirty rhyme routines over music not only predated Andrew Dice Clay by several decades, but continued the long tradition of rhyming in African culture. Some stories that were told in rhyme go many years back where Moore’s A Signifying Monkey, for example, is his take on the enduring tale of a trash-talking primate. Oscar Brown Jr who was born in 1926 in Chicago was a pre-rap poet and singer who was among the first to take traditional African rhyme routines and poems and set them to music.

It is primarily concerned with the art of creating beats or rhythms using the human mouth. The term beatboxing is derived from the mimicry of the first generation of drum machine.

SOCIAL IMPACTS "Keep in mind when brothas start flexing the verbal skillz, it always reflects what's going on politically, socially, and economical/y. " --Musician Davey D This quote by Davey D shows us that behind Hip Hop/Rap songs there is a meaning behind it, whether it would be socially or economically, and that the influence this has on other people as they believed to be speaking the truth. Brothas = Brothers Skillz = skills

IMPORTANT RECORDINGS/ PERFORMANCE/EVENTS OF THE STYLES Nas’s song ‘I can’ was believed to be the song that changed quite a few peoples views of hip hop as he tried creating an influence to the youth in America by using what most people listened to ‘Hip Hop’ and making it inspirational. A song like that helped me because I have a daughter, and because I make so much music that when she was younger I didn't want her to listen to, I owed her and other kids something, something real, something real that's up their alley, to show that I cared, that I'm a human being, that I'm not just about giving you a tune about what happens in the 'hood and all that every day. I've got to be a real human being, and that was one of my real human being records right there, for my daughter. So yeah, that's one of the most important records I ever made. " Quote from Nas

IMAGERY AND FASHION Late 1970 s to mid 1980 s In the late 1970 s there were many types of clothes that people would wear. One example of this would be sportswear and fashion brands such as Adidas, Le Coq Sportif, Kangol and many others. You would find rappers at that time wearing a lot of these branded clothes. During the 1980 s however hip hop icons for example Heavy D would wear things like Bomber jackets, sneakers and brightly coloured branded tracksuit to stand out to the crowed. Along with branded tracksuits many rappers, even to this modern day, will find wearing heavy gold jewelry such as gold chains, gold watches and gold earrings. They would also have multiple rings on each finger to ‘look cool’. Late 1980 s to early 1990 s During the late 1980 s many rappers started to wear Blousy Pants as this was a style influenced by Black nationalism. (African) Rappers would normally wear Kente cloth hats and have African chains with dreadlocks. The colors black, red and green were quite popular aswell as these were the colors of Black nationalism.

Mid 1990 s to late 1990 s In the mid to late 1990

Mid 1990 s to late 1990 s In the mid to late 1990 s, rappers such as Hot Boys (who were responsible for this trend) would tend to wear expensive type of jewelry such as diamonds and platinum to show of to everyone that they’re rich and to make themselves look cool. Another addition to the sportswear which was quite popular was throwback jerseys. The late 1990 s saw the rise in popularities and were therefore very expensive, costing hundreds of dollars. This meant that the demand for jerseys was quite high meaning that people saw the opportunity to make a business. They would sell a number of fake jerseys to the market. Modern (2000 s/10 s) The mid-to-late 2000 s saw a decrease in popularity of throwbacks. The Hip Hop fashion trends now are all over the place as many modern day artists are creating their own trends that people are beginning to follow. Brands such as Louis Vuitton and Gucci are more popular because of hip hop and therefore is difficult to see the change.
