HINDRANCES TO HEALING III. Faith Formula Faith formula thinking is based on theory that there is a strict causality between faith and healing. It holds that all divine blessings, such as health and prosperity, are constantly and fully available to all Christians. These benefits, which are supposedly available to every and any child of God, may be instantly appropriated, provided the individual Christian knows enough and believes enough. The most dominant feature of this kind of thinking is its human-centeredness.

HINDRANCES TO HEALING III Faith formula defines faith as the human will to believe.

HINDRANCES TO HEALING III Faith formula defines faith as the human will to believe. The human ability to believe is the key which unlocks God’s treasure chest of gifts.

HINDRANCES TO HEALING III Thomas Smail The baptism of the Spirit and our reception

HINDRANCES TO HEALING III Thomas Smail The baptism of the Spirit and our reception of His gifts are dependent upon our fulfillment of the conditions God lays down. If we know enough, repent enough, pray enough, at the end we shall have them, but if not, we shall not.

HINDRANCES TO HEALING III If you fulfill God’s conditions by believing enough, God will

HINDRANCES TO HEALING III If you fulfill God’s conditions by believing enough, God will heal. If you do not fulfill His conditions by believing enough, He will not.

HINDRANCES TO HEALING III This type of thinking will result in: Ø Guilt –

HINDRANCES TO HEALING III This type of thinking will result in: Ø Guilt – I should have believed harder. Ø Bitterness – God betrayed us. Ø Settling for a less challenging form of Christianity. Ø Passivity – Won’t pray for healing at all now.

HINDRANCES TO HEALING III In the NT, there are many instances that faith in Jesus did precede healing (Mt. 8: 10; 9: 18; 14: 31; Mk. 2: 4; 5: 36; Lk. 7: 50; 17: 6) In other instances, however, miracles preceded and served to produce faith (Mt. 11: 4; Lk. 24: 1335; Jn. 9: 1 -38; 10: 37; 12: 37; 20: 31).

HINDRANCES TO HEALING III The theological flaw rests in the naive belief that the Kingdom of God has fully come here and now. They believe that a full realization of kingdom blessings is prevented only by our lack of faith.

HINDRANCES TO HEALING III Proper Role of Faith Gordon Fee God is revealed to have limitless power and resources; He regularly shows Himself strong on behalf of His people. Yet His people still live out their redeemed lives in a fallen world, where the whole creation, including the human body, is in “bondage to decay” (Rom. 8: 21), and will continue to be so until we receive the “redemption of our bodies” (Rom. 8: 23)

HINDRANCES TO HEALING III Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

HINDRANCES TO HEALING III The Christian believes that not only today but also tomorrow

HINDRANCES TO HEALING III The Christian believes that not only today but also tomorrow belongs to God.

HINDRANCES TO HEALING III Thomas Smail When the prayer made in faith is not

HINDRANCES TO HEALING III Thomas Smail When the prayer made in faith is not answered and the healing for which many have sought does not come, we are not to look for someone to accuse of failure in faith. Rather we are to remember that besides faith there is hope. Hope has to do with God’s promises that are still future and hidden, just as faith has to do with God’s promises that are here and now. To the person who has believed for today but has not seen the answer come today, there comes the call to hope.

HINDRANCES TO HEALING III God’s love is as near to us in sickness and

HINDRANCES TO HEALING III God’s love is as near to us in sickness and in death as it is in healing. The one who prays, yet is not healed, need never question that reality. The biblically informed follower of Christ knows how to trust God for physical as well as spiritual healing and knows how to persist in trusting God when the effects of a fallen world continue to be with us.

HINDRANCES TO HEALING III In summing up thus far, we have encountered the various theological hindrances to a healing ministry. Embracing sickness as a sanctifying blessing 2. Passively accepting sickness as a decree of God 3. Substituting presumption for genuine faith 1.
