Hillsboro YTP It Takes A Village Program Highlights
Hillsboro YTP: “It Takes A Village” Program Highlights February 16, 2017
Hillsboro YTP Work Experience Mission… ØTo help students become as independent as possible in the areas of: üemployment üindependent living. ØWe provide: üinstruction, coaching, and modeling ühard and soft skill area development.
YTP Philosophy… Emphasize putting forth: quality work/effort/pace student accountability perspective taking showing initiative and enthusiasm accepting feedback (and making the change) in a positive and professional manner.
What we’ve learned… From the employers’ point of view: ◦ Entry level Workers were not “work ready” Dependability / accountability Sense of urgency (work with purpose) Initiative Accept feedback Cell phone use No “system” that provided scaffolding of skill development Students but… needed a work experience to develop skills, ◦ Some students were not ready for “prime time” - to be placed in a community work experience
Our Solution… Develop a class that provides direct instruction in soft skill training Develop a work experience system that scaffolds the learning environment toward authentic workplace standards ◦ Meet the student’s ability level ◦ Provide meaningful learning opportunities that increases in challenges as students gain skills ◦ Change the student, not the environment * Learn the employment readiness skill concepts in class, apply the skills independently in work experience
