But why is called a white elephant gift exchange? It goes back to ancient times in Thailand other Asian countries. If a Thai king became dissatisfied with one of his subordinates, he would give him a white elephant. The gift would, in most cases, ruin the recipient because of the cost to upkeep the elephant. But why would the subordinate accept the king’s gift? Because white elephants were regarded as holy.

In the Far East, the birth of a white elephant was regarded as a sign that the kingdom would prosper. In fact, Thailand is known as the Land of the White Elephant.
