1. 0 INTRODUCTION v Business Intelligence allows organizations to make better decisions v First use of the term “Business Intelligence” recorded in 1865 (Devens, 1868) v Business Intelligence is used in every industry
2. 0 BACKGROUND • Price of mainframe machines range between $133, 000 to $5. 5 Billion (Kanellos, 2007) • IBM Cognos Analytics on the cloud price range between $75 per month to $239, 400 for enterprise packages (IBM Cognos Analytics on the Cloud, 2017) • Cognos was an independent Canada-based company acquired by IBM for 4. 2 Billion (Austen, 2007) • IBM Cognos Business Intelligence helps organizations understand their data
2. 0 BACKGROUND v Many organizations are benefiting from BI tools but Higher Education institutions need growth in access and use of Business Intelligence tools v Budget cuts are still affecting Higher Ed. institutions which often results in higher tuition (American Council on Education, 2016) v Florida State University saves overall $200, 000 (Powers, 2011)
3. 0 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM 3. 1 Data Management and Accessibility 3. 2 Student Retention Rates 3. 3 Cost Reduction
3. 1 Data management and Accessibility • Vision: improved student experiences and business operations • Issue statement: large sets of data without meaningful interpretation • Solution methodology: create and maintain a centralized data warehouse and integrate systems
3. 2 Student Retention Rates v Vision: Improve enrollment process through data analytics to attract best applicants and focus on any problems with student satisfaction v Issue statement: Student dropout rates continue to increase and affect revenue v Solution methodology: Track student academic progress with personalized dashboards
3. 3 Cost Reduction • Vision: Data transparency for fact-based decisions and cost reduction strategies • Issue statement: A lack of available revenue leads to additional budget cuts and fewer funded programs • Solution methodology: Generate meaningful financial reports regarding the allocation of existing resources
4. 0 BUSINESS COMPONENT v Vision: Data transparency for fact-based decisions and streamlined budgeting processes v Budget: “a statement of the financial position of an administration (as of a nation) for a definite period of time based on estimates of expenditures during the period and proposals for financing them. ” (Merriam-Webster, 2017)
Example • Portland State University implemented IBM analytics to streamline budgets and reduce tuition by 3 percent • Moving away from Legacy Data Warehouse that required the use of spreadsheets (Portland State University, 2016)
Western Oregon University - Data Visualization v “That WOU design and Implement an ongoing planning and budgeting process that is broad-based, inclusive of all appropriate constituencies, data-driven, includes core theme planning, and leads to mission fulfillment. ” (HECC, 2016) ❖ “That WOU engage in comprehensive, on-going, systematic assessment that leads to mission fulfilment through the evaluation for core theme objectives and support of continuous improvement. “ (HECC, 2016)
4. 0 Dashboard
4. 0 Improved areas ✔ “That WOU design and Implement an ongoing planning and budgeting process that is broad-based, inclusive of all appropriate constituencies, data-driven, includes core theme planning, and leads to mission fulfillment. ” (HECC, 2016) ✔ “That WOU engage in comprehensive, on-going, systematic assessment that leads to mission fulfilment through the evaluation for core theme objectives and support of continuous improvement. “ (HECC, 2016)
5. 0 Technology Component - Demo • IBM Cognos Analytics V 11 introduces a user-friendly interface that promotes selfservice • Data visualization gallery • Data transformation (drag and drop) feature • Map visualizations • Zoom and pan feature
6. 0 RESULTS 6. 1 Data Management and Accessibility 6. 2 Student Retention Rates 6. 3 Cost Reduction
6. 1 Data management and Accessibility v Vision: improved student experiences and business operations v Issue statement: large sets of data without meaningful interpretation v Solution methodology: create and maintain a centralized data warehouse and integrated system
6. 1 Data management and Accessibility • The University of Massachusetts reduced project time delivery rate by 67 percent with the use of IBM TRIRIGA (UMASS, 2013) • The University of Kentucky reduced the timeframe for usable data by 87 percent by creating a centralized data warehouse through the use of the SAP HANA platform (SAP University of Kentucky, 2017)
6. 2 Student Retention Rates v Vision: Improved enrollment process through data analytics to attract the best applicants and focus on any problems with student satisfaction v Issue statement: Student dropout rates continue to increase and affect revenue v Solution methodology: Track student academic progress with personalized dashboards and track student feedback from social media feeds
6. 2 Student Retention Rates • The University of Dayton has increased student retention by 3 percent with the use of Alteryx and Tableau (University of Dayton, 2016) • The Hamilton County Department of Education achieved a record high graduation rate of 84. 5 percent in 2013, which is an increase of 13. 6 percent, with the use of IBM Analytics technology (Hamilton County Department of Education, 2014)
6. 3 Cost Reduction v Vision: Data transparency for fact-based decisions and cost reduction strategies v Issue statement: A lack of available revenue leads to additional budget cuts and fewer funded programs v Solution methodology: Generate meaningful financial reports regarding the allocation of existing resources
6. 3 Cost Reduction • Marist College saved $350, 000 by delivering data analytics through the Cloud. To achieve this they used the IBM Smart. Cloud (Marist College, 2012) • The Miami-Dade County Public Schools found a way to reduce energy consumption by the use of Cisco Digital Ceiling; tests show that in one room energy consumption was reduced by 50 percent (Cisco, 2016)
7. 0 Conclusion v Business intelligence is vital to any organization v Predicts and determines key changes through fact-based reports and dashboards v Address issues Higher Education Institutions face v Exceptional data management and accessibility v Improve student satisfaction and business processes for student retention v Analyze available resources and find ways to achieve cost reduction v Tools require substantial data architecture with a robust data warehouse
