International students - 1997: 150. 000 foreign students in France - 2003: 220. 000 foreign students in France - Nowadays: 288. 000 foreign students in France (12, 3% of total student population)
Types of institutions • Three major types of institutions welcome students in France: • Universities • « Grandes écoles » • Specialised schools and institutes
Universities • Funded by the French Government; open to all students; assessments taking place throughout the curriculum and final examinations. • Students are granted national diplomas (licence, master, doctorate) and universities’ diplomas of very high quality. • Offer various types of education (short, long; professionally oriented courses; lifelong learning, etc. ) in various disciplines (law, economics, accountancy, management, arts, litterature, humanities, medical sciences, technology, etc. )
The « Grandes Ecoles » and specialised schools or institutes ü The « Grandes Ecoles » : • schools of engineering, schools of business and management and schools of political sciences and administration. • Very selective : admission based on examination’s results after 2 years in prep school or evaluation of the application (with selection) after 2, 3 or 4 years in higher education. ü Specialised Schools and Institutes: • offer programs in specific fields (art, architecture, paramedical studies, journalism, audiovisual…) • offer government-sanctioned diplomas or degrees that are specific to the granting institution.
Duration of studies • Duration of studies depends on the type of institution and the type of degree: - university: ülicence: 3 years ümaster: 5 years üdoctorate: 8 years - « Grandes Ecoles » : from 3 to 5 years depending on level of admission - specialised schools and institutes: from 2 to 7 years depending on the fields of study
University programmes Three main stages : - licence ( 6 semesters, 180 ECTS) - master ( licence + 4 semesters, 120 ECTS): 1 year of study after licence ( master 1 or M 1) + 1 year of study – more specialised ( master 2 or M 2) Two types of Master: professionally-oriented (with internship) research/academic master (with thesis) - Ph. D ( master + 180 ECTS): 3 years of studies after master
Vocational education: professionally oriented short programmes • BTS (postsecondary technical certificate) – 2 years of postsecondary study – 120 ECTS credits • DUT (university technical diploma) – 2 years of postsecondary study – 120 ECTS credits • Licence professionnelle (professional bachelor) – 1 -year long programme after 2 years of study (BTS or DUT) – 180 ECTS credits
Programmes taught in English • More than 700 programmes covering all disciplines, from licence to Ph. D
Admission criterias • Secondary education diploma (lise diplomasi + YGS/LYS; 3 GCE/GCSE A-levels, etc. ) • A very good command of French language (DELF/TCF B 2) for programmes taught in French

Staying in France : a student’s budget • Registration fees: • - at university: from 189 to 396 € yearly - for « grandes écoles » : very fluctuating costs Mandatory and complementary insurance: - health insurance : 213 EUR yearly - private insurance: (from 150 to 550 EUR yearly) Daily life: - housing: from 150 to 600 EUR monthly (but there is a state housing assistance system) - food: from 150 to 250 EUR monthly (one meal at RU costs 3, 20 €) - transportation: around 30 EUR monthly •
