What are Degree Apprenticeships Degree apprenticeships are the latest model to be developed as part of higher apprenticeship standards, seeing apprentices achieving a full bachelor’s or master’s degree as a core component of the apprenticeship Degree apprenticeships combine both higher and vocational education, with the support of an employer and a University/Training Provider. They can take between 1 – 5 years depending on the entry level you start at

What do the Levels mean? Level 4 - Certificate of Higher Education (Cert. HE) Higher National Certificate (HNC) Level 5 - Diploma of Higher Education (Dip. HE) Higher National Diploma (HND) Foundation Degree Level 6 - Degree with Honours – eg Bachelor of the Arts (BA) hons, Bachelor of Science (BSc) hons Level 7 - Master’s Degree, eg Master of Arts (MA), Master of Science (MSc) Postgraduate Certificate
Higher Apprenticeships are a great alternative to University The aim of the Higher Apprenticeship is to raise the skill levels of people in industry to a degree level with many employers now offering these pathways to their employees You will receive: • training, both on- and off-the-job (day release or block release linked to a University or Training Provider) • a salary and all the usual employee benefits • the opportunity to really start moving your career forward The Government is committed to expanding the number, range and quality of Degree Level Apprenticeships
WHY DO A HIGHER APPRENTICESHIP? • Raise your skill levels to degree level with substantial training and the development of transferable skills • You have the potential to become a ‘manager of the future’ • A way to earn and learn, gaining a real qualification, longterm career path and the possibility for higher earnings • Learn while you work so your industry knowledge is up to date and practical skills are right for the organisation’s business • You still get to graduate with your cap and gown, along with several years of work experience under your belt And, best of all, no university debts: you’ll have been earning for the length of your apprenticeship and there are no tuition fees
Eligibility and Entry Requirements for Higher Apprenticeships • • You must have GCSE Grades 4 -9 in English & Maths Be able to study at Level 3+ Have achieved good A Level passes OR Have completed an Advanced Apprenticeship (L 3) OR • Completed a Level 3 Vocational Qualification in a relevant subject such as a BTEC • Ideally had substantial work experience in your chosen industry
HIGHER APPRENTICESHIPS after A levels If you have achieved A-levels you may still be expected to start at intermediate (level 2) or advanced (level 3) as some sectors, such as engineering, require you to build up your occupational skills Many Higher apprenticeships include tasks such as managing a project or managing a team which is why you would very likely need to incorporate an Advanced Apprenticeship into the pathway to get this experience
Sought after Skills and Qualities Teamwork Collaboration Interpersonal skills Enthusiasm Motivation Communication Analysis Creative solutions Attention to detail Logical thinking Initiative Personal Aptitude It helps if you have a particular interest in the area you want to work in and can demonstrate this from previous experience
WHAT COULD I EARN? If you’re aged 16– 18, or aged 19 or over and in the first year of your apprenticeship, you’ll earn at least the minimum wage for apprentices of £ 4. 15 per hour (increasing to £ 4. 20 from April ‘ 21) HOWEVER Many companies pay more than this, particularly for higher level apprenticeships: ● An aerospace engineering apprentice at BAE Systems UK can earn £ 23, 550 per year. ● A higher accountancy apprentice can earn over £ 13, 000 per year. ● A software engineer apprentice can earn around £ 14, 500 per year. In fact, you could potentially earn upwards of £ 300 per week
WHICH HIGHER APPRENTICESHIPS ARE AVAILABLE? There are hundreds of different apprenticeships on offer. From accounting to aerospace engineering. New apprenticeships are being developed all the time with more highly skilled apprenticeships popping up each year Big companies like Rolls Royce, Glaxo. Smith. Kline, Goldman Sachs and the BBC offer degree apprenticeships, but you’ll also find smaller companies offering them too In 2018/19, there were 75, 060 starts on Higher and Degree apprenticeships*

APPLICATION TIPS ● Clearly read the job description, making note of key points such as entry requirements and ‘essential’ qualities ● Research the company beforehand, so you understand its key areas and priorities ● Include relevant experiences and skills and any work experience ● Be specific and give examples to demonstrate what you have to offer ● Back up your statements with evidence ● Use an appropriate email address and voicemail message on your phone ● Be aware your social media accounts maybe checked ● Don’t let emails end up in your junk folder ● Don’t undersell yourself. Be confident (but honest!) about your abilities
