What are Magnet Programs? • Magnet Programs are theme-oriented programs. • They provide in-depth experiences and distinct choices for students with different interests, talents, and aptitudes. • BCPS offers 78 magnet programs on the high school level. 2
Who Can Apply to Magnet Programs? • All students who are eligible to attend a Baltimore County public high school can apply. • Students with IEPs and 504 Plans are encouraged to apply as well. • Transportation is not always provided. • All programs have entry-grade level restrictions. 3

Selecting Magnet Programs • Only ONE application per applicant. • You can select up to THREE magnet programs on the application. These THREE programs DO NOT have to be at the same school. • Please make sure to mark your selection(s) carefully and be aware of the grade level restrictions. 11
Submitting Applications • Applications for the 2021 -2022 school year will be available on Wednesday, September 16, 2020 at 12 noon. • Applications are to be submitted ONLINE by 1 p. m. on November 6 th, 2020 via the magnet application website. • Online applicants will receive an emailed confirmation of receipt. • ANY changes in program selection(s) MUST be made online by 1 p. m. on the application deadline, November 6, 2020. Changes CANNOT be made after. 12
Application & Eligibility Process Admission decisions for most high school magnet programs include: 1) Evaluation of academic performance • Academic grades • Current mathematics enrollment • Attendance *There is no weighting or special consideration given to grades received in gifted and talented classes or grades that are calculated by means other than those used by BCPS. 2) Magnet assessment • Most schools conduct assessments that are specific to each magnet program and may include an audition, practicum, interview, writing sample, test and/or performance assessment and may require prior preparation. 13
Magnet Assessments • Information regarding the assessments for specific programs will be available on the Magnet Programs website by December 2020. *It is the responsibility of the parent to obtain assessment information and to ensure that the application completes the assessment on the scheduled date. * • There must be appointments for assessments and that will be on the Magnet Programs website by December 2020. 14
Placement 1. Priority Placements – must score 80% or higher (Child of Employee, Assessment Scores- Highest 20%) 2. Random lottery of applicants scoring 80% or higher 3. Random lottery by descending scores (79%, 78%, 77%, etc. ) • Parents will be notified by email of the admission decisions by March 5, 2021. It is important to have updated email addresses, as email will be how they will correspond with all parents about assessment information and admission information. 15
Transportation • Transportation is provided from a limited number of pick-up points located at designated school sites. • Parents are responsible for providing transportation for their students to and from the designated pick-up point. 16
Report Cards • If a student attended a non-BCPS school for any of the 2019 -2020 and 2020 -2021 school year (grades 6 and/or 7), they will need to submit a copy of the report card(s) with application. • Applications who receive a report card from a non-BCPS school for the first quarter/trimester of the 2020 -2021 school year, MUST submit a copy of their report card by December 11, 2020. 17

Application Information Meetings Learn about the magnet application process! Meetings will be virtual (Google Meets). Parents must pre-register through the Magnet Programs’ Web site to receive an email invitation. Applying to Private Schools 1. Do NOT give your recommendation request forms directly to your teachers! 2. Email your teacher recommendation request forms to Ms. Dreyer, School Counseling and Records Secretary. (mdreyer@bcps. org) 3. Many private schools use something called the COMMON REFERRAL FORM, which can be used to apply to multiple private schools. 4. Some of the private schools require you to take the same admissions test, like the ISEE – results can be used to apply to multiple private schools. 5. Ms. Dreyer will email your transcript and teacher recommendations to your schools. 24
