Book Classification Systems v Dewey Decimal v Library of Congress A book’s classification number is needed to locate a book in the library.

Every book has a classification number more commonly known as a call number. In school libraries the call number for a book typically uses the Dewey Classification System and the first 3 letters of the author’s last name. The call number is the book address for locating the book on the shelf.

The Dewey Decimal Classification System is the most widely used library classification in the world. o Developed by Melville Louis Kossuth Dewey who changed his name to Melvil because he was so interested in simplified spelling. He would have loved texting today. o Ten main classifications o Use in more than 200, 000 libraries http: //community. lyndonstate. e du/library/About. Us/The. History/ Melvil.
