Needs Assessment After conducting a needs assessment, the high school principals determined the following would be beneficial to the students. • Consistent, rigorous instruction with high learning expectations for all students regardless of learning mode (in-person, remote, virtual) or delivery method (HCS teachers, Edgenuity, ACCESS) • Adequate course offerings and staffing for traditional and virtual students • Manageable course loads for students • Effective, accessible academic supports for all students • Lower failure rates for high school students • Manageable teaching and supervision assignments for all teachers and staff 2
Flexible Scheduling for High Schools Proposed for 2021 -2022 School Year Examples of flexible scheduling may include the following: • A/B block classes lasting all year (90 minutes on alternating days) • Skinny block classes lasting all year (45 minutes a day every day) • Blocked semester classes (90 minutes per day every day for one semester) • Classes during period 0 or 5 (during lunch or outside of typical school day to meet student and/or program needs) 3
Benefits of a Flexible Block Scheduling • Allows adjusted course load for students based on individual needs and interests • Provides opportunity for reduced homework based on course load • May require less preparation time for teachers • Increases opportunity for participation in Career Technical and Dual Enrollment courses • Increases opportunities for students to earn required credits for graduation and gain a college and career readiness indicator • Allows each school to accommodate specialized courses such as AP, IB, band, dual enrollment and magnet 4

Flexible Scheduling Summary • All high school students will have the opportunity to earn eight credits per year • All high schools will have the same basic bell schedule • Each high school principal will be allowed flexibility in developing the master schedule to meet the needs of their student body • Schools will be allowed to blend semester-long and year-long classes to best serve their student population • One credit classes may be offered using a “skinny” – 50 -minute period all year, a full 84 -minute class on alternating days all year, or a full 84 -minute block every day for one semester 6
