REMOTE AND FLEXIBLE LEARNING – EARLY INDICATORS OF SUCCESS AND AREAS FOR DEEPER FOCUS

REMOTE AND FLEXIBLE LEARNING – EARLY INDICATORS OF SUCCESS AND AREAS FOR DEEPER FOCUS Our Term 2 experience of remote and flexible learning has provided some clear indications of effective practice. It has also highlighted the challenges that need further consideration. We know that student wellbeing and engagement are foundational precursors for learning and achievement. 4

– EARLY INDICATORS OF SUCCESS AND AREAS FOR DEEPER FOCUS Strong relationships and open dialogue with families, carers and kin will support student engagement and assist teachers with differentiating learning appropriately for the individual learner context. We know that partnering with families/carers and kin around student learning at all levels and ages, supports student efficacy and confidence as well as fostering positive attitudes for learning. We know that considerations of the home environment and access and connectivity to technology for individual students is important in remote and flexible learning. 5

High Impact Teaching Strategies To support learner engagement, confidence and achievement through remote and flexible learning we can draw upon the High Impact Teaching Strategies we know are influential in providing the consistency and purposeful routines that are critical to student learning. The webinar series will explore 4 HITS through sharing practical examples, applications and adaptation opportunities for a selected strategy. The webinars focus on the following 4 HITS: Structuring Lessons, Explicit Teaching , Worked Examples and Differentiated Teaching. 8

Worked examples are incredibly useful learning tools for students in remote and flexible settings

Worked examples are incredibly useful learning tools for students in remote and flexible settings as they allow students to practice against a modelled example where success is transparent. Use of worked examples can reduce student cognitive load, enabling them to focus on understanding a process which leads to an answer, not the answer itself. 9

A Geography example Original Assignment: An overview of a location consisting of hand written content supplemented with compiled cut-and-pasted magazine clippings. • Substitution: Use presentation software (like Powerpoint or Prezi) to construct a presentation providing information about a selected locale. • Augmentation: Incorporate interactive multimedia – audio, video, hyperlinks – in the presentation to give more depth and provide more engaging presentation. • Modification: Create a digital travel brochure that incorporates multimedia and student created video. • Redefinition: Explore the locale with Google Earth; seek out and include interviews with people who have visited the local.
