THE LIBRARY: WHO WE ARE AND WHERE WE ARE One City One Book projects help our community come together to have honest dialogue about topics that touch the lives of Guilford County residents. Each time we become more connected and committed to creating a community that respects and celebrates its rich diversity. - Brigitte Blanton Director of Libraries Mission: In partnership with the community, the Greensboro Public Library strives to provide free and equal access to information, foster lifelong learning, and inspire the joys of reading. ONE CITY ONE BOOK: THROUGH THE YEARS One City, One Book has taken place in Guilford County since 2002, when our community read A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J. Gaines. With many ways to become involved beyond reading the book, the inaugural year was a success and it paved the way for even greater community involvement to come. In 2015, more than 7, 000 readers read A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson and participated in meaningful conversations, programs and events. #Hidden. In. GSO
HIDDEN FIGURES: THE COMMUNITY’S CHOICE This year the Library has taken its “focus on community” to new heights. After possible One City, One Book selections had been identified by a selection committee, the Library placed the final decision in the hands of the citizens. After a month of public voting by more than 500 residents, Hidden Figures was chosen as the overwhelming favorite to be the 2017 One City, One Book community read. With the book’s emphasis on science and the local connections of central characters in both the book and movie production, Hidden Figures has proven to be a great choice…and 2017 may be the best One City, One Book yet! #Hidden.
